  • "). Not content to plod along in this vein, the song takes some dramatic, heightened twists. Punky "Month of May" like "Empty Room" also ramps up the pace, reminding me of Violent Femmes. Like most of the songs here, it provides lyrical references to "the kids," although the autobiographical nature of the album makes it clear these are not the kids of today but from the band's youth (and the band itself). "Wasted Hours" has a plodding guitar melody enhanced to deep sonic saturation with synth effects ...

  • Gordon Gano "Hitting The Ground" (2002)
  • SONGS FROM THE WELLMy initial reactions to this album were mixed and quite varied. As a huge, longtime Violent Femmes fan, I was both overjoyed to hear that Gordon Gano was releasing a solo album and somewhat troubled by the fact that he was doing this apart from the Violent Femmes. Then, when I got my first look at the album, I was perplexed to find that Gano lends his unique voice to only three of the eleven songs. The whole "I wanted Gano to sing all the songs" thing had a negative ... of the title track. Harvey actually "out-Ganos" Gano on this one, reproducing his trademark yips and vocal stylings to a remarkable degree while playing a mean guitar like nobody's business. Gano's own performance of the song, which closes the album out with a bang, can do no more than equal Harvey's remarkable effort. Gano's delivery of Make It Happen is a song steeped in Violent Femmes mystique; Gano proves that he still has all of the passion and fire of youth with the brash, in ... as controlled cacophony. Then there is Frank Black, who sings as if he has just downed about 30 cups of strong coffee. His deep, guttural voice and energetic (to say the least) performance is memorable indeed.I would urge Violent Femmes fans to give this album a chance; it will not only grow on you, it will amaze you. A lot of these songs sound like nothing the Violent Femmes would ever consider trying to perform, yet the spirit and talent of Gordon Gano clearly reveal themselves in the words ...

  • Album Review: Jukebox the Ghost – Everything Under the Sun
  • " is a game changer for the band. Siegel is weaker vocally, but he makes a successful grab for the grandiose notes his bandmate is known for. The track is reminiscent of an expansive Violent Femmes number, particularly the jerky instrumentation and the "Everything under the sun" lyrics. It's a great deal of fun and way more weird (and slightly darker) than some of their other stuff. Things are whipped into true majesty in "The Sun (Interlude)", a prog rock demonstration that leads perfectly into "The ...

An active professional musician since the mid sixties, Mackay first found fame as the Funhouse-era sax player for The Stooges, (once inspiring Miles Davis to forcefully plug his ears during an NYC gig) then continuing on a long, varied voyage through styles as a member of the Violent Femmes, backing Residents' guitarist Snakefinger, collaborating with J Mascis and Mike Watt and nearly the entirety of the musicians from the Radon collective ... into wholly unique musical territory. For the Radon Uropa 7 inch series, Mackay donated the painful clamour of his pinball duet Punk Machine and supported this release with west coast shows in 2003. In the next years, Mackay accelerated his activity with a barrage of collaborations. He reclaimed his position with the Violent Femmes, on stage and in the studio, toured 5 continents with the Stooges and Radon Ensemble, lent his talents to a track on the second Grails record for Neurot Recordings ...

  • 5-10-15-20: Tegan & Sara's Sara Quin
  • it ourselves, it was being played around both houses. I remember on a family trip, "Troy" being on a mixtape. I was begging my mom and my stepdad to rewind it and play it over and over and over again. And I remember stealing the tape from my mom's stereo cassette player and playing it in my room. Our favorite thing was our parents making mixtapes for us for our own private listening satisfaction in our rooms. Violent Femmes: "Add It Up" This was the hardest age for me. I still listened to what my ... parents listened to, but I also became 100% autonomous and started picking what I wanted to listen to, going to gigs and music stores and trying to find something new to listen to that wasn't my parents' music. Probably the most relevant discovery around that time was the Violent Femmes. Their debut record was particularly popular for Tegan and I. I memorized the lyrics to "Add It Up". It was so popular at gigs and concerts to do the circle moshpit. Girls would do it because you would just walk ... like on the street, me hollering hysterically to the song. I loved that song so much. Nobody I knew was listening to the Violent Femmes. We grew up in a neighborhood where everybody was listening to hip-hop. The most alternative music would have been electronic music for raves and stuff. We were the only kids listening to punk rock and alternative music, so this was a big discovery. Pre-internet, these things weren't easy to find. I honestly don't remember how I came upon the Violent Femmes. I ... had no idea that it had been released when I was like three. I thought it was new. As far as I was concerned, the Violent Femmes were punk music. I had heard punk music, and I loved punk music and the traditional stereotype of what punk music was. As far as I was concerned, this was just as punk as anything I was listening to. In a way, it felt more punk because there wasn't this obscuring of the vocals. You could hear everything so clearly, and something really resonated about that. I grew up ...

  • Q&A; with Gordon Gano pt. 2
  • Yesterday, Gordon Gano gave us a preview of his new record, Under the Sun, with Bill and Brendan Ryan, aka The Ryans set to release in September. Here, Gano continues his e-mail exchange with FILTER about the "so-low" record: Violent Femmes was known for its slightly risqué lyrics about love and sex. Listening to Under the Sun, it's apparent your themes have changed since then. What do you use as source material now? I can't really compare and critique present work with former. Perhaps I ... to "discover" it at some later listening. Now that I have written this maybe it's still too complex, hard to understand and long! Ha! I have written very few poems. I think this one is one of, if not the best, certainly my best performance/reading. Years ago, I read a couple of times and was mediocre. Can I blame the material? Or the performer? Both. Despite disbanding and all the recent lawsuits, Violent Femmes released a cover of Gnarls Barkley's "Crazy" in 2008. Can fans expect any more music from ...

  • Q&A; with Gordon Gano Pt. 1
  • Gordon Gano—currently teamed with Bill and Brendan Ryan, aptly calling themselves Gordon Gano & The Ryans—is on the verge of another album release. Aside from rounding out the trio that is Violent Femmes, the band that helped lay the groundwork for folk punk, and forming a gospel group, The Mercy Seat during Violent Femmes' hiatus, Gano has already released a solo record, a huge collaborative effort titled Hitting the Ground. Under the Sun, set to drop in September, will mark another of Gano ... . No misunderstanding possible there I think. It's also the first album not by Violent Femmes in which I sang all the lead vocals (an earlier record, Hitting The Ground, has many great guest artists) but, it is still a collaboration between the Ryan's and myself. Under the Sun definitely has more of a country twinge than any of your previous work. What inspired you to go down this road? Some of the music that the Ryan brothers write has that flavor. It's also in my roots. The album's sole ballad, "Under ...

As the medley finally wound down, the band assembled at the lip of the stage with hand-held percussion and huddled toward the hushed crowd, playing lighter and more loosely as they ventured back into the ragtime theme. • Gnarls Barkley: Hail Hail Rock n Roll!
  • , "Are you ready for some rock n roll?" No, I really wasn't, but you clearly got it so give it to me, baby. One things that has always surprised me about Gnarls Barkley is their cover of the Violent Femmes' "Gone Daddy Gone," which they played. Call me old-fashioned, but essences of Danger Doom and the Goodie Mob covering the Violent Femmes is not something that seems terribly ordinary. And what about their cover of Radiohead's "Reckoner," which they also played tonight? I have a hard time imagining ... inner city kids (like many in Atlanta) blasting either band from their stereos. But you have to hand it to Cee-Lo and Danger Mouse: they took it and ran with with it, and now people who might not normally listen to the Violent Femmes or Radiohead are listening to the Violent Femmes and Radiohead. Somehow, Gnarls Barkley is making rock n roll accessible to everyone. When they do it, people get it. And when you can make music that speaks to everyone, that is music at its finest. Gnarls Barkley ...

These "fun" songs felt labored, like everybody was trying too hard-- except for Danger Mouse, who looked like he'd rather be in a recording studio as he hunched over a keyboard or organ or glockenspiel (for the Violent Femmes cover "Gone Daddy Gone"). Cee-Lo danced a bit and exhorted the funky people in the house to make some noise, etc., but he didn't seem completely comfortable. Introducing mega-hit "Crazy", he said wearily, "you've probably ...

  • OK, we can all agree that reissue LPs are among the coolest things going in the music bizness today, right? Well, wait 'til you get ahold of the latest trend, reissue 7" records! We're getting the party started by resurrecting the fantastic sound of The Fems. To do so, we had to travel back to the year 1982, when this single was pressed in some insignificant amount by the band and spread around the country, one copy at a time. The Fems represented early American hardcore punk at a time when spee......

  • Interviews: The Goodnight Loving
  • -based band. Our music scene here is just like your city, plenty of awesome bands and plenty of shitty ones as well. Of course, some of our greatest we have exported to the rest of America, such as The Violent Femmes and The Promise Ring, but our next greatest export is The Goodnight Loving. I got the chance to sit down with Zach Byrne and Andy Kavanaugh in the back end of a local, South Milwaukee venue. This folk-pop group doesn't have any intentions to dismember you, but they sure wouldn't mind ...

  • Delta Spirit: Ignorance Is Bliss
  • of Delta Spirit's members were formerly part of the San Diego-based emo band Noise Ratchet. They've definitely ditched the guyliner and gone in a more roots-based direction. While poking around on the Web, I've read comparisons to several other bands. Aside from the Stones, I've seen Delta Spirit compared to The Beatles, the Violent Femmes, Spoon and The Waterboys. Whether or not I've been influenced by what I read since buying the disc, I hear traces of those bands in Delta Spirit's music. Hell, there ...

  • Gnarls Barkley faces a "'Crazy" dilemma
  • 't have their moments. It's hard to resist the band's cover of the Violent Femmes' "Gone Daddy Gone," with Danger Mouse on xylophone, and "Run," from the band's second album, "The Odd Couple," was performed with frantic intensity. Before the band dipped in "Crazy" late in the set, Green said, "I'm sure you've heard it a million times, but I'm contractually obligated to perform it." Although the singer later claimed he was joking, the big hit did feel a bit obligatory. Much more moving ...

"I've been to many concerts at the Palladium over the years," he said, "but one of my favorites was seeing the Violent Femmes when I was in high school. In many ways, it was classic '80s. • violent femmes - Add It Up (1981-1993) (from ultimate-guitar)
  • Let me just say that The Violent Femmes are a great band. Now as I say this, some may disagree. With that, I must insist that anyone who disagrees with me listen more closely to them. Their sound is not one that can be easily compared. All I can say is that it's definately different. There's not really a lot of electronics involved instrument-wise. Basically acoustic bass, snare drums, and (of course) the infamous tranceaphone. All of that combined with the occasional sax and Gordon Gano's whiny......

  • Violent Femmes - Permanent Record: the Very Best of Violent Femmes (from Pitchfork)
  • My best friend when I was 16 was a guy named Dave, and he had a family friend who was a freshman at the university in my town. So on weekends Dave and I used to go to this guy's dorm and see if we could blend in at parties, trying to meet college girls by pretending we were college guys. If it sounds like we were operators, bear in mind that neither of us had ever been on a date. I'm pretty sure I'd never so much as held a girl's hand. I think we had the courage to try be......

  • Violent Femmes - Permanent Record (from Blender)
  • A walk down memory lane with Violent Femmes is more like a roll across barbed wire. Oh, here's the one about date rape! And here's the one where the backwoods Jesus freak throws his daughter in a well and hangs himself! Gordon Gano's psycho-geek quaver and the trio's ability to unleash fury from acoustic instruments were touchstones of postpunk, but this single-disc retrospective, spanning 1983 to 2000, does their legacy no favors. Fans will find nothing new or rare; novices will be better serve......

  • violent femmes - Violent Femmes (from ultimate-guitar)
  • The Femmes don't sound like other bands. They rely on loopy flowing basslines of Brain Ritchie and Gordan Gano's whiny shriek, all accompanied by minimalist guitar work, and a drummer who doesn't even use a bass drum. This record has flkish type music, reggae, and some Ramones style punk.I know all of the words from the beginning of this record to the end. Gano has a talent for writing lyrics that are instantly identifiable with. He is the voice of teen angst. "Well you know that I want your lov......

  • Violent Femmes - Permanent Record: The Very Best Of Violent Femmes (from cokemachineglow)
  • "What you want out of a Violent Femmes compilation is simple; the first album in its entirety, and then a smattering of the ensuing disasters."-Bill Wyman, "The Spin Alternative Record Guide" -1995Ouch. The late rock scholar Bill Wyman doesn't like the Violent Femmes. He spends most of the article from which the above quote is derived completely crapping on every one of their studio recordings other than their legendary debut. But he does make two valid points: (1) While their ensuing output was......

  • Violent Femmes - New Times (from Entertainment Weekly)
  • ''I'm an old man,'' wails Gordon Gano. ''I got an old man's pain.'' No longer the poet laureate of puberty, the top Femme (now 30) ushers his Milwaukee trio into maturity with a new drummer and new label. With New Times, the sound hasn't changed much-bare-bones punkabilly with killer hooks and dive-bombing bass lines-but this time the Femmes cook up some real steam, something they haven't done since 1984's rowdy Hallowed Ground....

  • Violent Femmes - Add It Up (1981-1993) (from Robert Christgau)
  • No deep thinker and probably a jerk, Gordon Gano is the good-looking cad in a collegiate picaresque, putting himself across on feckless charm and endless libido. Most will grant the Femmes' 1983 debut its cult status and leave it at that, but the 19 titles otherwise unaccounted for on this typically irresponsible compilation suggest that they stayed young through the '80s. They get away with countless variations on the hoary "America is the home of the hypocrite"--"I Hate the TV," "Old Mother Re......

  • Violent Femmes - Why Do Birds Sing? (from Entertainment Weekly)
  • Nearly 10 yearsafter the Violent Femmes launched their career by capturing ChrissieHynde's attention in a street gig outside a Milwaukee theater, thispeculiar acoustic trio is still mining the nervous depths ofpubescent alienation with their unique brand of psycho-teenage folkrock. Together, Brian Ritchie's weird druggy lead guitar-like bassand singer Gordon Gano's high, whiny voice and mean-natured lyricscan effectively turn even the simplest upbeat three-chord rock songinto a sicko paean to ad......

  • Violent Femmes - 3 (from Rolling Stone)
  • Gordon Gano seems like the creepy kid next door who'll go off the deep end any minute, and the more he acts that way, the better the Violent Femmes are. On 3 (actually the band's fourth album), he can sound unhinged when chronicling normal activities like seeing a vaguely familiar person ("Mother of a Girl"), comparing himself to his father ("Father") and asking a friend why she hasn't called back ("Telephone Book"). Merge that with Gano's staccato guitar playing and the clanging beat of bassist......

  • Violent Femmes - The Blind Leading The Naked (from Rolling Stone)
  • Gordon Gano's mind is a profane weapon. The Violent Femmes' singer and songwriter established this Milwaukee trio's underground reputation with manic songs that unveiled a bratty, adolescent id and offered all the charm of John McEnroe's barking at linesmen.Gordon Gano's heart is a spiritual vessel. In his spare time, he plays in a gospel band called Mercy Seat. They don't do songs about fathers who kill their children or about needing to get laid, as the Femmes do. But several of Gano's new son......

  • Violent Femmes - Hallowed Ground (from Robert Christgau)
  • First time out they sounded so original musically that I made it a spiritual exercise to forgive Gordon Gano his bad personality. But everything you might hum along with on the sequel was invented generations ago by better men than he. And though "Black Girls" may not be racist (or "faggot"-baiting), it takes a great deal of petulant delight in daring you to call it a name. Then again, maybe it is racist....

  • Violent Femmes - Violent Femmes (from Rolling Stone)
  • Violent Femmes is the unnervingly precocious debut of a Milwaukee trio that not only acts like it just reinvented rock & roll but somehow manages to sound like it as well. It isn't just the band's unlikely instrumentation – electric guitar, acoustic bass and a solitary snare drum–that flies in the face of rock tradition; everything from Gordon Gano's adenoidal lead vocals to the group's flamboyantly absurd name (the Femmes are all male) indicates that this outfit ought to be both pretentious a......

  • Violent Femmes - Violent Femmes (from Robert Christgau)
  • If Jonathan Richman thought he was as sexy as Richard Hell, he'd come on like Gordon Gano. And if you believe Jonathan Richman damn well is as sexy as Richard Hell, which Gano is counting on, remember that what makes Jonathan's kiddie act so (shall we say) appealing is that he counts on nothing except his fingers and toes. Gano knows his stuff--the barely electric music is striking enough for rock and roll. But for all its undeniable humor and panache the effect is precious, wimp bohemianism so ......
