Removed Default Avatars

8/3/2011

For example, I just changed the way avatars work on the site. The site used to display these default avatars if you didn't set one from your profile or have one associated with your email via gravatar. I always thought that looked ugly. Just figured out a way so that no avatar shows if you don't have one.

Working On The Site

You may notice some changes here and there as I have some time this summer to give the site some love. Let me know if there's anything you are clamoring for!

Mailing Mixes. Can music save your Mortal soul?

1/24/2010

Don Mclain once sasked Can Music save your Mortal Soul?I dont think it can save your soul BUT it can lift your spirits and others as well.

When I first started making mixes I made them for myself for trips to work and to help motivate me while I was power walking. The first mix I made for someone else was for my dads birthday.Thats was no easy tasking .Sneaking into his record collection to borrow his albums to make his present and not raising suspiction was hard but I did it.I felt like a secret agent on a recon mission.Ms James Bond?Ollie Norths Counterpart?Sneaky DJ?Hmm Ill Take Sneaky DJ!

Dad LOVED his tape.I then started making them for family and friends.Positive feedback fueled my creativy. When I would mailed mixtapes to distant relatives I got happy phones calls saying how they were so touched by the mix.It usually arrived after a hellish day at work or in traffic.

Music may not be able to save your Mortal soul BUT when your give the gift of music it means alot to another music lover especially if its a surprise!I often mail out a couple at a time and it does get ya in the wallet but knowing your putting a smile on some elses face is worth it!

So go ahead make someones day and mail them a mix tape or CD for a birthday,Anniversary or just for the heck of it!Oh and if its for your Parents put on your cammies and belly crawl your way to their music collection!

Music gives you a natural high no pill or bottle can provide without a hangover or withdrawl!Say no to drugs and alcohol and Yes to music!

Groove on!

The Glory of Mix Trades

1/17/2010

When I discovered The International mixtapeproject Last year I was thrilled there were others like me who Enjoyed swapping mixes.Wow theres a whole army of us!As far As I know mix making took off with the Dual cassette recorder in the 80s.Heck perhaps earlier.I used to tape my fave songs off the radio in the 70s but backround noise was a issue.lol

I remember my fist Real stereo That had the dual cassette deck and turntable and when I tapes off records, tapes or off the radio and there was no backround noise I felt like a pro.

Untill a year or two ago I wondered if I was the only one doing this being ipods were now the rage.My answer came when I typed in mixtape in the search bar when I used myspace. There were college groups and such that did it but after a few pages I came accross The International mixtape project.I looked into it and its for real and serious.Ive been a member For about a year now.

Not only do you get to trade cool mixes but Ive actually made a few friendships online with a few mixpartners and we continue to trade on a regular basis sending each other our latest creations. So awsome.

I love stuff Ive heard and know but have gotten turned onto newer stuff too.Being im a DJ Mix trading is also educational!Ratatat, the Ting Tings and Hot Chip are a few bands Ive been turned onto in the last year.

So I send shout outs to Ryan Mixtape and The IMP team.to learn about IMP go to www.internationalmixtapeproject.com

Trade cool music and meet cool people!

Happy mixing!

Trish

Oh those old mix tapes! Cassettes vs CDs.

1/14/2010

I go into my archives and check out some of my old mix Tapes I made in the late 1980s-2003.I noticed when I first started making them I only listed the song.Around 1994 I started listing the song and artist.Around 95 I started highlighting the artists and if I had room on the index card I wrote down names I credited to inspiring me to make that mixes and thanked anyone who lent me CDs.

I sometimes listen to these tapes wondering what was i thinking at the time I made them and what mood i was in.Often Id get inspired after DJing school Dances with my friend Frank. He would often lend me new CDs he bought.

The creative Process in making tapes was fun but long.If I got a mix finished in 2 days it was a miracle.Another thing about tapes is If I was in the middle of making a mix and Id be interrupted by phones calls knocks on the door etc I would have to stope the tapes, rewind it to the last song and go from there hoping my editing skills were on target.

Once in a while various interruptions would cause me to forget to write down a song on the mix and when I played it back Id realize I forgot to write it down and add a pS at the botton of the index card.

With CDs editing and trackilisting isnt an issue if you have a media player that print out the playlist. Most do these days.

CDs-If you have a scratch in the CD and it scips you wont hear it till you play it back.I keep pretty good care of my CDs but Ive run into this issue with music I get from the library etc.

Media players.Music match had the coolest cover art but once in a while would just print out various artist as the artist if your piece of music came from a compilation CD.

I've had pretty good experiances with itunes. If it misprints a name you can double click on it and correct it.

So theres my theory on Tapes V CDs.
