Here's another interesting paper written using AOTM data to create better playlist algorithms: http://ismir2011.ismir.net/papers/PS4-11.pdf

For example, I just changed the way avatars work on the site. The site used to display these default avatars if you didn't set one from your profile or have one associated with your email via gravatar. I always thought that looked ugly. Just figured out a way so that no avatar shows if you don't have one.

Wasn't it beautiful, weren't we cool... Oh those days! We used to mix tapes for ourselves, our friends and... for the cutest girls whom we would impress with personalized tapes, full of music they didn't know yet. For hours we would lock ourselves in our rooms, alone with records, 12"-s, singles, a turntable and a tape-deck A perfect mix of two times 45 minutes, and you will be remembered for ever!

You may notice some changes here and there as I have some time this summer to give the site some love. Let me know if there's anything you are clamoring for!

So tell me, has this ever happened to you? It's a late night. You have got a list of things to do longer than a rap sheet for an alcatraz inmate and the only way you can do it all in one night is listen to some music (or caffeine, its up to you). But you are in such a terrible mood that you don't know what to listen to. So you put your computer (or ipod) on shuffle and magically, as if the music gods were intervening, a playlist comes out of the Void. Sometimes i think the shuffle function has some divine cosmic link that's connected to your brain and can tell what song you want to hear. When I'm angry, I get Queens of the Stone Age, Rage Against the Machine, Sex Pistols, Death from above 1979. When I need a band to resore my groove, I get Parliament, LCD soundsystem, the White Stripes, the Black Keys. And then, as if the gods know I haven't listened to all my music, I get a song that I haven't heard in a while (or sometimes never have heard) that some how fits with the shuffle playlist. Just now, I heard some deep Franz Ferdinand and Led Zeppelin cuts that I forgot about. The shuffle is a divine instrument. Use it wisely

Greetings Everyone! I am new to this site. My first impression is that it has alot of great songs. But I do not understand exactly how to enjoy this site. Can you download the mixes somehow? There are so many obscure songs. Its impossible to find them to download on ITunes, etc...
So how do you go about enjoying these mixes versus just reading the list and remembering a few old tunes here and there?
Thanks
Chris the Rover

Try out http://artofthemix.org/buzz.aspx -- it is a great new resource on the site for finding the latest news and mp3s about the artists and bands you love.

I've updated the site so now you can easily reuse your Avatar from other social networking sites on Art of the Mix. Go to manage profile to try the new feature.
