Other Mixes By gabechouinard

CD | Mixed Genre
Just a little somethin' somethin' I threw together for a friend of mine, with a taste of blues and country and indie. I will dutifully link to the mix (which is a mixed mix) on the morrow.

My first attempt at a mixed and produced mix. 1:01:30 of danceable choons swerving from soul to funk to lounge to jazz to... well, lots of things! And a few surprises just for fun. It isn't perfect, …
CD | Indie Rock
Ahhh, the eternal question: "Am I indie enough to hook up with that cute girl wearing that tee shirt over her long sleeve shirt?" Just a quickie mix of some artists I've been listening to lately, to …

Comment:

This mix began life as a tribute to that hippest of hipsters, the ever-innovative Skipper Bartlett. But of course I couldn't stop myself from adding that ever-intrusive gabechouinard stamp, and the results aren't quite Skipper-ish.
However, it still became a groove-laden journey through lounge and hip-hop and soul and all sorts of other good stuff, and I have to say this is by far the most fun I've had putting a mix together yet!

I'm indebted to the massively cool 365 Days Project for some of the clips and surprises here.

I'm glad you're having fun, this does look great. Ike & Tina, Etta & Jackie Wilson are always welcome sights. One of my favorite early Beatles too.

Thumbs up for Ray, Mel, Frank, Johnny & Nina as well, of course. Looking forward to the download and checking out the others. I have been listening to Thievery Corp a bit lately.

Varied but cohesive - this looks great, Gabe. Love that Soul Coughing track...other highlights for me being Sharon Jones, Ike & Tina, RJD2, Cohen, Grandmaster Flash, Cash, and Ray Charles. Big fan of STD PSA's too.

Wow, this is absolutely full of gorgeous sounds. I don't really know where to begin but would definitely like to give a thumbs-up to the Thievery Corporation into Beatles, Mel Torme, and the Jackie Wilson slotted in at the end there. Nice work!

That Marlena Shaw track has been getting a lot of commercial air time lately, but I like it and this mix, too.

put this monster on at work today, very enjoyable. old favorites that popped up here: Dimitri From Paris, Nina Simone, Johnny Cash, Beatles, Dead Can Dance, Leonard Cohen, Anita O'Day. new sounds that caught my ear: Plas Johnson, the Soul Coughing/Clifford Gilberto Rhythm Combo/Moby trio, Fink, Lowney's Chocolates, Lords of the Underground, RJD2... also dig the prologue near start of disc two, and now I want to see Swinging Barmaids! I'm a Shirley Bassy/007 fan, so the Kanye West feat. Jay-Z track was a hit with me, but best of all is Boca 45's "Down To Mexico!" never heard them before, and now I've got their CDs on my list. guess it's obvious I liked this a bunch - thanks for sharing it.

perfect mix - absolutely spot on as far as my taste is concerned. Was meaning to comment earlier as I've downloaded it for a while but it's been hectic in terms of work and I didn't AOTM (used as a verb here). Good to see we share a common passion for more than that Ghostwriter - although you got to admit that "since we last spoke" is far inferior to that "deadringer" masterpiece. I am actually wearing my rjd2 t-shirt today! I really like your mix and your 365 day project choices are very cool (swinging barmaids - gotta love 'em). This "house of mirrors" track (side A, track 19) has donated its breakbeat to the DJ Shadow tune that became the soundtrack of Dark Days. I hadn't heard the original until a friend played it for me and I went crazy (along the lines "THIS IS THE ORIGINAL THAT DJ SHADOW STOLE THE BREAKBEAT FOR THE DARK DAYS THEME FROM!!!"). Then I heard more of David Axelrod and realised that mr Shadow has used more than that. Excellent mix - looking forward to volume 2!!
