Comment:
I wanted to create a "warm weather" mix with a theme. This mix serves as a soundtrack for an imaginary film about a riot, styled after the Notting Hill Carnival riot of 1976. The opening tracks are meant to convey the misery-free, all-dancing party portion of the film. Skanking galore!
Right around the half-way mark or so, we begin to learn that life is not so grand for our imaginary protagonists. Then, the carnival descends into a full-scale riot... Babylon is truly burning.
I anchor this mix with "Police and Thieves," a deceptively beautiful song and the tune that provided a de facto soundtrack for the real Notting Hill Carnival riot. After the Heptones weigh in with the sumptuous "Babylon Falling," I lighten the mix considerably -- giving my imaginary film a happy ending by closing with Johnny Rotten's third favorite song and a Jimmy Cliff tune that reminds us all to quit "fussin' and fightin.'"
This mix is dedicated to all of us who are emerging from a winter of sadness and entering into a spring that promises much happier times. You know who you are.

This looks fantastic. I especially love "Sweet and Dandy".
Excellent mix! Maybe also Brand Nubian's "Wake Up (Reprise In The Sunshine)" could've made it.
I can dig this! I have some John Holt on cassette I picked up in Jamaica in the 80's. Very cool and laid back. This looks interesting and off-beat (but I am not a reggae expert - just a mainstreamer). Hope all is well.
