The Axis Of Sunshine: Ballrooom/Sagittarius/Millennium
Comment:
A brief exporation of the wonderful world of the late Curt Boettcher, the preeminent purveyor of 60's sunshine pop (or soft rock, or easy listening). This focuses on Boettcher's 3 most essential projects. After producing hits for the Association, Boettcher put together his own group, The Ballroom, and recorded a series of sappy but enjoyable mellow pop tunes. He then hooked up with uber-producer Gary Usher (of Beach Boys & Byrds fame), and teamed up for the slightly more psychedelic and baroque (by baroque I mean "more harpsichords") project Sagittarius, whose first album, Present Tense, was a pleasant (if still pretty sappy) blend of sunshine pop, more straightforward late 60s pop (the lovely "My World Fell Down"), and full-on psychedelia (the near-perfect "The Truth Is Not Real"). Boettcher then assembled the Millennium, whose Begin is heralded as one of the "great lost classics" of the psychedelic age. It's not quite all that -- still a few holdovers of mild sunshine pop keep it firmly grounded in the easy listening genre -- but it does have some pretty trippy and enjoyable psychedelic standouts, and the kick-off "Prelude/To Claudia On Thursday" may be one of the most wonderful examples of 60s psychedlic pop ever recorded, sadly overlooked by most Nuggets-styled reviews of the era.
Feedback:
awesome stuff, love to have it
Smashing!!
Aural bliss!
I don't know much about the history, but I like the genre so I'll check him/them out. Thanks!
This is one of my faves... All three albums are WELL worth investigating for anyone interested in psych/sunshine pop.
Wonderful job.
Wonderful job.
Gorgeous!
Brilliant stuff! The Millennium and Sagittarius are like the Beatles and Rolling Stones of sunshine pop, and have aged well in my opinion. The first time I heard "To Claudia on Thursday" I thought it was Of Montreal or something.
Love the idea behind this mix, and it looks great - I'm more than partial to a bit of sunshine pop and I'm always glad to see that others are, too. I really have to investigate the genre more, but this looks like it would be a great place to start.
Wow, the Millennium are terrific. Thanks for bringing them to my attention!
Very impressive work. Dangerous for the musically diabetic, however.

I've always found Boettcher a little hard to take (much like the whole Sunshine genree), despite all of my efforts to embrace him. That said, he certainly has/had talent and this is a fine summation of his peak period.
Of course I am very familiar with all these songs, but the one I would like to comment on is - hey wait a minute - to use that device I would have to know at least one song. Oh well. But if you say it is sunshine pop, then I'm in, Pop.
This is such a great tribute. I love Sag., but don't know some of the other stuff here. I really need to hear this.
Great stuff. But what about the Goldebriars?
At long last, ALL the GoldeBriars' tracks that were in the Sony archives have been released by Sony Music Direct (Japan) & Collector's Choice Music (USA)....Many of the tracks had never been released. For more details: www.goldebriars.com
