Comment:

"ONCE YOU FIIIND OUT... THE CIR-CUM-STAN-CES... ... ... THENNN YOOUUU, CAN GO OOOUUUTT!!!" (Beefheart, rather phonetically transcribed. Indeed, I agree with the sentiment.)

For Luke79, who specifically requested lots of the artists/styles on this mix. Track 8 features lyrics by Jack Kerouac; track 12 is from the Lou Reed / John Cale / Nico "Le Bataclan '72" bootleg; tracks 15, 16 and 17 all fade into each other; track 18 contains considerable (20-some seconds) blank space at the end.

Marc Blitzstein and Alan Johnson are both piano accompanists whom I've decided to credit equally with their more famous track-mate vocalists. Blitzstein gets extra credit here because he's also the translator of Bertolt Brecht's German lyrics for Die Driegroschenoper (The Threepenny Opera) into English, Mäckie Messer becoming the Mack The Knife we all know and love; and Johnson gets it because he navigates the inherent drama of Philip Glass's accompaniment to this snatch of Ginsberg's epic poem "Wichita Vortex Sutra" on the Holy Soul Jelly Roll box with a touch defter than Glass himself provides on the Wichita Vortex Sutra album; in my own humble opinion of course.

Enjoy!

This is good. Love the Brian Eno, can live without the Yoko Ono. Although I understand its inclusion, no really, I do. Always a pleasure to read informative notes. Ah, Zappa and Beefheart - it's all a blur.

Just listened to it - seamless opening tracks, wildly eclectic (a good thing) middle section, and surprisingly rousing ending (Ginsberg - Carousel), capped by a mad flourish of Beefheart. Tres enjoyable!
