Comment:
Sunshine at the fag end of this Medieval January might be too much to hope for. Instead I bring you a mix of `jives & wails', sand lorn sambas, sticky sap dubs, bright, playful brass and a distant memory of fumbling foolishly with a bra strap in a field of long, tall grass. Notes written with much irreverance & foolish grin.Enjoy!
Side 1
5) Heard about in adult music press but never heard `til t'other week when I purchased Introduction To. If war can be made any worse it's when an acoustic guitar conjoins with the voice of an Okie Yippie to tell me, `War is bad.' I was however taken by this slice of Folky Africana via Oklahoma. Okie Ochise might be telling me yet again war is bad but I'd prefer to think he was singing of a beautiful nubian woman spied washing clothes in the river.***
8) Recorded in Bahamas when the Modays' `drug abuse was
phenomenal.Factory ended up paying over a quarter of a million pounds to make the album. the band stripped down the recording studio to pay for their new cocaine habit. They even sold their clothes.' "Do I think the Mondays will go down in musical history? I couldn't give a fuck!" - Shaun William Ryder
12) I never meant to ride this ride but the ride started and I couldn't get off till the ride had finished and when the ride was a ride I could never forget
I felt compelled to get back on that ride to see if any ride could be so damn good
and when it was I got back on and pressed record.
Side 2
4) Taken from The Fairports debut when Judy Dyble was still aboard and the band sounded not unlike Jefferson Airplane. Sadly, Dyble was dumped by the band after her relationship with Richard Thompson fell apart - in other words Thompson kicked her out. Her CV includes Giles, Giles, Fripp & McDonald, Trader Horn & Penguign Dust. She stopped working for many years but has recently returned to recording and is currently working on a new album.
5 -6) Yay-Yay for Ye-Ye Girls in mini-skirts slicing up the Paris Boulevards to Wicked Wilson Pickett..
8) `Total acid.the second verse is a chorus of chanters singing `Yogananda'.how psychedelic can you get? (Howard Kaylan)
9) Progressive House Duo - whatever this means I don't think they've cornered the real estate market. I like this stuff in short bursts and only if I'm in charge of the play button.
11) Freakpower were Norman Cook's vehicle post House Martins pre-Fat Boy Slim, Annie (my g-fr) went out with lead singer Ashley Slater and painted an amazing portrait of him. I re-listened to this track last night, after many years of it slumbering in a box of assorted compilations, and had no idea who Freakpower were until I googled their name and saw Ashley's name.
*** late press: I'm enjoying Pretty Smart On My Part!
Feedback:
this is real nice. especially like the first 7 tracks, tho I've not heard the 5th. (what could be wrong w/ a song called "Niko Mchumba Ngobe?") and is that Joan Crawford on the motor scooter, circa 1941?
First class. Entertaining tunes and entertaining notes. I believe you have entertained me; for that, I thank you. Incidentally, TornadoZ, that's not Joan Crawford, it's Gina Fabricado - her eyebrow double. A common mistake, but Joan wouldn't thank you for it.
Lubbly jubbly - tell me do you print out your sleeve notes with every mix?
Delightful! I so love that version of Grazing In the Grass; it's real. So real, so real, so real, so real. CAN YOU DIG IT? WHOO! WHOOOOOO! The Turtles track is a pip-a-roo too.
I can dig it!
Splendidly wrought, sir. And I'm all for long bursts of "progressive house" (whatever it ees that's so "progressive" about it). As for Phil Ochs and his cohorts, I strongly recommend Tom Lehrer's "Folk Song Army" ("Ready! Aim! Sing!").
dig it too
Excellent mix, Dom, but you're being too hard on Phil Ochs. He was one of the few early 60's radicals who refused ever to compromise his politics. So much so that he found himself under constant from the FBI & CIA surveillance and had his throat cut under mysterious circumstances when visiting Tanzania. How very unlike the life of out own dear Dylan.
Haha, I love that part in 24 Hour Party People with the Happy Mondays, when they're all sitting there just waiting for the vocals to come in, but they never do. Great mix, Dom.
Hilarious and serious all at the same time, like the mixer which wrought this festival of Top Sounds. Go Dom(1)..!
Nice one full of great picks.
There's no end to your mixing talents Dom. Great notes also.
Perfect to bring a bit of warmth to this time of year (is it as absolutely perishing with you as it is here?!) Lots to love on here - I'm more than partial to a bit of Basement Jaxx. And, the bit in 24 Hour Party People which GambleOn mentions amuses me greatly.
Freakin' fantastic, love Copey's ode to safe sex. & Crushed grapes just the way I like em, then fermented into a nice little St. Emilion.
Totally terrific and amused by the idea of young Dom fumbling with a bra strap... my favourite Shaun Ryder quote is this, commenting on the Bee Gees' Jive Talkin': 'That's a funky fookin tune, man.'
Absolutely tremendous and witty, as always.
Fantastic. I love the Jose Feliciano especially. I just wish you'd put a hot man on the cover some time and give the ladies some eye candy for a change. (How about the dancing guy from the Happy Mondays?)
Hey, who you callin' a f....oh, I see.Excellent mix. Excellent notes. Excellent.
