The Ultimate Big Star Anthology (2-cd mix)
Comment:
While I hesitate to use the word "Ultimate" in the title of a mix -- that's just begging for trouble -- I think this is about as close as it gets. Big Star remains one of my favorite bands ever, and their three proper albums -- #1 Record, Radio City, and Third (Sister Lovers) -- are the absolute pinnacle of pop music (well, calling the latter "pop" is a bit of a stretch). Although I compiled a concise 1-cd version awhile back, I opted to replace it with a more definitive 2-disc version, starting with Chilton's early days as a teenaged voice-for-hire in 60's blue-eyed soul/pop band The Boxtops, and wrapping up with 2005's Big Star "reunion" studio disc (with Chilton and Big Star drummer Jody Stephens teaming with Jon Auer and Ken Stringfellow of the Posies, with whom they've toured for various "reunion" shows here and there over the past decade). Along the way I threw in some tracks by Rock City and Icewater (Chris Bell & Jody Stephens' pre-Big Star bands, where they recorded a few tracks that Bell re-worked for the first Big Star album), as well as some solo material from Chilton and Bell (though I ignored much of Chilton's rather mediocre solo career). Though the best Big Star mix would simply take their three studio albums from start to finish, I did have to make some painful cuts (i.e. "Holocaust" and "Big Black Car" for Third, just a bit too somber for this compilation). Enjoy.
Feedback:
Good lookin' mix & cover!
What can i say. The world would be a better place if everyone knew and loved Big Star. Altho as a self confessed music snob you may not want that to happen. I'm not sure, but if just one AOTMer who is unaware of them downloads a track likes it & ends up getting into them this will be a job well done. This has obviously been a labour of love for you and goddam it it's something special. I would have probably included O My Soul (probably my favourite Side 1 Tk 1 of all time) but, hey less of the nitpicking sam. BTW i'd be interested in your views on last years release...
It was sammyg himself that re-introduced me to Big Star. Therefore, I'll not rabbit on. I will say that this is mix of some stature. I would expect no less from the legendary Pop Kulcher. I urge you to visit his most entertaining website and expand your horizons. In conclusion, despite your superior knowledge of all things Big Star, sammyg, I think this mix is faultless. Burn me a copy immediately and we'll say no more about it.
Though it would be hard to not compile a fine mix with the source material...this is yet another example of your usual well-researched, well-thought-out and accomplished overview.
Just fantastic. It must be said that I don't own nearly enough Big Star stuff; I think this is a good sign that this has to change! Well done for doing this.
Everyone needs some Big Star in their lives. I seem to have acquired a shed-load of Big Star covers over the years, I might just throw them together after seeing this. I think this is marginally better than your previous effort, if only Chilton had reworked We Built This City this would be perfect. Until he does we'll make do with this. Top job.
Can't complain about your choices... Penultimate only, because I hope their recent album means they ain't done... Great cover.
excellent stuff, I will see them on sunday in stockholm, is there anyone who has seen the new line up?
Echoing Siobhan's comment.
great band, great choices. my fave (holocaust) is sadly lacking, though, but that happens with a band as great as them/
Holocaust is my favorite as well, but this is such a fantastic and comprehensive compilation I'm sure I wouldn't even miss it. Well done!
I'd love to trade for this.
Just starting to get into this band. Looks interesting.
This is pretty damned definitive, although I third the "Holocaust" complaint. It's so comprehensive, though...
