Comment:

01. ('Til Daylight, 1975) A whopper begets a whopper: Belizean reggae that arose from the rubble of Hurricane Hattie. 02. (Midnight Cowboy Soundtrack, 1969). Band of purported cannibals most notable for backing John & Yoko on several TV appearances in 1972. Thank god the succulent John remained unscathed.
03. (Friends & Buddies, 1975). The power of funk and soul, not to be confused with the father of Wilbur & Orville.
04. (Five, Four, Three, 1974) Polish vocal jazz ensemble with electric guitar and red beet soup. Borderline sour but not quite.
05. (1978) Cockeyed Chicago cabbie formed a band and released a single on the Bandit label. We're all the better for it, so tip big next time.
06. (When I Was A Young Girl, 1961) "Bessie Smith in Stereo" said Leonard Feather in Playboy. Sorry fellas, neither Barbara nor Bessie appeared in the mag.
07. (Let My People Go, 1971) Former bay area pimp and soul man, with sharp teeth that sink deep. Walked away from fame and his buddy Fillmore Slim to become a physical therapist. (I think Marvin had a phrase for that).
08. (Bola Sete at the Monterey Jazz Festival, 1966) My favorite illegally pocketed seven ball.
09. (For Christians, Elves, and Lovers , 1976) Tammy Faye Baker rock from Ohio (after Jim walked out). Many thanks to Shawn Porter for this track.
10. (20 Celebri Canzoni Degli Anni, 1938) Tenor, actor, amateur boxer and silversmith from Florence, dubbed the 'Golden Voice of Italy' in the 1940's.
11. (You've Come This Way Before, 1968) Soap star who gave birth to Christina Applegate in 1971. So in this case we are not the better for it. Boycott soap at your earliest convenience.
12. (Stand By Me, 1972). Promiscuous as Wilt Chamberlain in the world of drumming. He's laid the nasty beats on over 3000 albums, from Aretha to Nina, Hathaway to Hall n' Oates. The man gets around.
13. (Ananda Shankar and his Music, 1975) Bangin' Bartha! Spaced-out raga mixing sitar and moog synthesizer with Indian music.
14. (Singing A Happy Song, 1959) "Patsy on Jesus, Elvis without the pelvis". (I prefer my Elvi with pelvi, thanks). This well-watered button fern performed in over 2000 tents and churches in a 20 year period.
15. (Follow Me, 1966) His official website says he's an "extremely modest man". However he once claimed to have 80 songs stashed away that were better than anything Lennon/McCartney had ever written. And he described himself as "better than Elvis, sexier than Dave Berry ('The Crying Game'), and more exciting than Tom Jones. We all know the latter is impossible. Note to travellers in Portugal: according to the official website there is a con-man going around pretending to be Mr. St. Peters. If you see him, say hello.
16. (1978) Yellow Cab & Company make the return trip free of charge.
17. (My Little Red Book of Winners, 1965) Meaner, sadder, and sexier than the Love version, no?
18. (Exotic Mixture, 1976) Thanks to the better half of Stippenquop for this gorgeous track.
19. (Presents: The Vault - VOL 1.5, 2004) The man is a genius.
20. (My Inbred Pedigree Chums, 1997) Bright mellow masterpiece bustin' outta no way street. I suppose you have to hear it to know what that means.
21. (Anyway That You Want Me, 1969). Dusty Springfield's favorite singer, but not mine. Who do you trust?

Wow! Not only a another fantastic exploration into the bed of Orchids...but what a wonderful guide, as well! A few artists on this mix have recently shown on my radar...Sands, Sete, Peters, Mann and Shankar...our planets must be realigning. Now, to look into the other 15+ artists which are unfamiliar!

God, I love your mixes...always so gosh-darn enlightening. Yeah, I said it. I said gosh-darn. Dag nabbit!

I was clicking my way through the "recent" section of AOTM today, wondering where the lions where. I realise it's Monday and all that that entails. I was just about to give up when up popped this mix. My heart was all aflutter as I glanced through the list of artists. I freely admit my ignorance of many, but some names leapt off the screen and brought a smile to my slack-jawed face. Not least Eric Roberson - as soulful as they come. The notes are brilliant. The photograph is perfect and so evocative. This is an object lesson to us all. I want this mix so bad it's probably illegal. Thank you, Orchid, you've rescued AOTM, and at the last moment too. You must be Super Orchid - faster than a speeding turntable...

. . . . and I've just listened to that Manfred Mann version of 'My Little Red Book' . . . . . and it IS way meaner, sadder and sexier than the Love version . . . . (I want to have CDV in my little red book) !

I haven't checked the site all week, so I'm just now discovering this treasure. This mix makes me want to lock myself in a room all weekend and make at least 10 quality compilations; sadly, none would rival this one. You are on another level with this mix - the selections are great (from the 5 I actually recognize), your liner-notes are superb, and the cover is the icing on the cake. Congrats on well-earned MOTW!

Well deserved...

Like to throw some shout outs to joey de vivre, Media Vixen:Radio Sally, Curtis Burns and 12vman (among others) who really floored me with some fine entries.

But, must say...I LOVE Orchid's mixes. So, pretty much any mix she compiles would be worthy of nomination.
