Who Loves The 80's?...That's Right!
Comment:
Who says that you have to love the 80's just because VH1 told you to? If nothing else, these New Wave classics will have you looking for your HyperColour t-shirt and New Coke in no time!Feedback:
The last 4 here are absolute classics, they almost lend credibility to a decade that badly needs some. I find 80's bashing a touch harsh, sure there was a lot of drivel but a lot of potent musical seeds were sewn in that era, as this collection demonstrates. Fine mix, now were did i put that damn Rubix Cube?
Ditto Barrydali -- though most of these are memorable as period pieces, I think R.E.M. and the Jam in particular (and maybe Echo & Cope) are simply spot-on great songs regardless of context. Which isn't to denigrate the rest; I think "Stand & Deliver" is fun as all hell, but I can't listen to it without thinking about the cheesy video and all the other 80s crap of the time.
Just Back The Truck Up! These's a LOT to love about the "Thin Ties" decade. New Wave's power pop sensibilities sure (in my opinion) improved on the 'arena rock's worst excesses from the 70's. Bocapella, this puts me in the mood for some Compilation Making... THANK YOU for this inducement and this Oh So Fine mix. If you got Oingo Boingo... You gotta be good!
great stuff here, especially like that Berlin track. almost makes me forget about salmon pink leg-warmers. hey, where's the Human League!?
Here I go agreeing with barrydali again. He's right of course. I'll also include tracks 12 & 16 as personal faves -- woohoo!
Berlin did another track?? I agree with the rest, some great tracks here. And just how many films about 80s America feature Tk 10 on the soundtrack?
The 80's. Nothing wrong with them. The last five tracks are proof of that.
Any given decade gets buried in the waste of its own excesses and mistakes. One of my own personal goals in making a mix is to focus on a decade and pull out the tunes that I recall from that time. The 60's, for example, for so many, start and end with The Beatles, who were brilliant and genius and blah blah blah, but that whole (imho) pointlessly stupid mindset tends to push aside countless other artists (like Marvin Gaye!) who are swept aside. This mix is a perfect example of why we do this sort of thing, why we use our time and resources to put together a mix of any kind. While some of these particular cuts may seem "obvious" (a low blow imho!) they aren't.The singles of an era are what we were all listening to, and they cut across the airwaves. They are also what drove us out to (remember these places? Pretty much an archaic idea nowtime) record stores run by people Just Like Us, that loved the music...and we'd pick up the elpee/tape/disc of an artist, and find wondergems buried and never to hear the mass airwaves. Love the mix, and a damned fine mix it is!
now i have little to no bearing in this, as i was born in 1987! my recollections of 80s music include "pop goes the world" by men without hats.
i love all of the 80s. since i didn't live them, i can love the genuinely great music and i can love the excess. i can even do that with the 90s. it's music today that i have a problem oding that with.

Your 80s mix is so, like, totally rad. For real.
It is. It really is.
