Comment:

FLAMIN' GROOVIES. Were they five years behind the times or five years ahead of the times? One thing is for sure the Groovies led by guitarist, graphic illustrator, cartoonist, Cyril Jordon never fit in with the rock status quo. Not that they avoided it. To fully comprehend the puzzelment of lack of popular success, lets go back to the beginning. It is the Summer Of Love in San Francisco when two school chums, Cyril and bassist George Alexander plus vocalist Roy Loney (approprietly surnamed) set forth creating a band fueled on straight forward, high flyin', mother lovin' rock and roll.Roy with Rock-a-billy styled vocals and proto punk snarl, jumping in the air, pointing his finger. Cyril legs spread far apart and bending into the guitar. They played the Avalon and The Fillmore but failed to properly freak-out. They issued a self record debut and only got signed in the mayhem of signing every SF based group. Getting caught in the coat tails paid off in the recording of Flamingo and Teenage Head, the apex of the Loney era of the band. The records were more Rolling Stones then the Stones themselves prompting Keith Richard to express that he favored those more than Sticky Fingers. After the release of Teenage Head, Loney would leave to attempt to pursue acting. He was replaced by Chris Wilson. Reduced-frills guitar rock was starting a comeback but the Groovies had already re-packaged themselves and drew inspiration from the the British Invasion sounds, but not just a nod, but a full out worship. The music would be brighter, they would mix covers in with originals styled in that nature. They would become huge in France playing to thousands while back in the USA, they would be lucky to draw over fifty.(maybe the French are just in hating Americans) Just when jangle styled guitar seemed to be coming back the band saw the departure of Chris Wilson. By then the group had developed the ultimate cult status and was very much underground, they carried on for a bit. The band is the missing obvious link between the original sixties "nuggets" garage bands and the later "Bomp/Voxx" garage movement. Attempts to have the band regroup have been unsuccesful and Cyril has stated no reunion is to happen without George Alexander who along with Jordon remained a constant in the various band line-ups. The tape gives an overview of the band as well as groups who have stated inspiration and influence from the Flamin' Groovies. You will note recordings bearing the asterix * these are recordings that I was lucky to obtain from Cyril Jordon.
