Reprise of my demo for LOVE 76.1FM in Fukuoka. Here is the deal: I was a producer/disc jockey for KNON 89.3FM in Dallas and felt like I had things down pretty well for a shot at a station here in Japan. I took familiar tunes from the locals, mainstream evergreens, easy agreeables for the five percenters, some personal favorites, and a touch of pure eccentricity. Now, the deal with Japanese radio is that the announcers can't shut the F up while the tunes are spinning, so I had to add lots and lots and lots of talk on top of the mix just to make sure they knew I was with the program, literally. Like Stuttering John auditioning for the announcer of the Tonight Show, I had to fill it out with fakeness so I threw in a couple of commercials along the lines of Almond Joy, and a shirt you can buy with your big initial on it. I even threw in an English lesson for good measure. And announced my name over and over. And over. And I liked it. And I still like it. But they didn't get it. They got me. They pointed me right to the booth and said to get on the mike and do my bit. But they didn't get it. They didn't understand part of the bit is using computer generated voices. And it hit me why they were labeling their DJs as AJs: they were looking for announcing jockeys. And that meant the program director was gonna be a hard one to bust if one felt the strength of the program should be on the content rather than the personality. So, I looked at him, shook my head and nixed the idea for the time being. Later on, the locals with the connections to the station got wind of the demo and said I should go back and push the presentation more. I hemmed and hawed on it. A couple of years later, I was a guest on a program on another radio station, Rainbow FM in Kurume. Despite being asked to be on the station, they actually said I was too good for them. As if they were afraid I would leave soon. Man, Japanese radio is a hard one to figure out. We have a large English speaking following here, and the playlists were solid core Jack before the current Jack genre that is sweeping across the States. But the echelon between the general manager and the program director is hell to figure out. Consensus on not rocking the boat rules and it takes a lot to roll with it. Anyway, this is the demo. And this is most definitely The Jon Neukam Show. PLAY IT LOUD. And clean up the house while listening 'cause that is what radio is all about.

Welcome back! I wasn't aware of your sabbatical, because I think I found this website after you'd already left. But I'm glad you're back... I enjoy all of your mixes, stories, and cover art. Thanks for sharing the music.
