Grown Up All Wrong, Volume 12
Comment:
Some fun factoids - Vox Pop were an LA punk supergroup of sorts. This single from 1982 is an inspiring slowcore dirge from an era when things were getting faster & louder.I was disappointed upon hearing last year's Shonen Knife reissues when I discovered that their quirky charms didn't seem as otherworldly to me now. A few cuts probably still make for good left field picks on mixtapes. After signing to Virgin Records they recorded slicker takes of some early songs, but this version's from their first LP.
Head over to mixotheque to learn more about New Zealand's Scorched Earth Policy & to d/l a jaw dropping number of kiwi pop essentials.
Always economically minded, I waited to find a cheap copy of the Alice Cooper box set, rightly presuming I'd only ever listen to the first two discs. As a result I don't have the booklet so I'm uncertain about the origin of this studio version of Levity Ball (as opposed to the live version on the perpetually misinformed live in Toronto bootleg). I'm guessing it was an outtake from Pretties For You.
The Lee Harvey Oswald Band were Rick Sims' of the Didjits gag band who's Ziggy Stardust on smack brand of glam comes off better & more on target than any number of grebo & hairspray bands of the same period.
I always thought of Denmark's Sort Sol as a Joy Division knockoff 'til I recently heard their first single. Lydia Lunch makes a guest appearance midway through this raunch-a-billy romp. Thanks to post-punk junk for this & the preceding two tracks.
The band Jet featured here is NOT the lame Aussie band, but a glam group from the 70's that featured the less popular members of John's Children, Sparks & Roxy Music. Later they became Radio Stars. I picked this off volume 5 of Hard Up Heroes. If anyone has a copy of Jet's LP available for dubbing please drop me a line.
The Edgar Broughton Band were a group of UK freaks who were regulars on the early 70's free festival scene, often performing from the back of their truck. I know I've used this tune on several mixes already, but this is an alternative take found on the reissue of Sing Brother Sing that doesn't beep out the "fucks" & also contains some odd background vocals.
Thanks to valis for the sleazetastical front & back cover images & for The Zerfas. I was initially put off by some of their jamming, but I wound up digging this track which features a far-out Moog solo & what sounds like a drugged out Robert Plant on vocals.
During an all night movie marathon following the accidentally downing of Dayquil before bedtime I caught the Flaming Lips doc Fearless Freaks. While seeing Steven Dozd shooting up did nothing to improve my state (nor did my second feature pick, Todd Solondz' Storytelling) I did fall for this track which plays over the closing credits. "This is my present to the world!"

Feedback:
Generally unobtainable heights reached on this one...simply fantastic.
Oh, hopefully you were given the heads up on the GTO's availability.

looks like big time , once again
Stellar! Too hot to handle!
Have also been anxious to see your latest. Nice cover and the mix is pure bred looking. The peaks appear appropriately timed and bookended well. Thanks for the entertainment.
This looks quality. That's my favourite drummer you've got on yr cover aswell!
Just great.
Really top-notch stuff all round - LOVE that Richard Hell pick, and there are a few things I'd like to hear that I don't know. Nice Half Japanese opener too!
Holy Sh*t!
Dear Lo-Fi, jr.,I have a problem and I turn to you for guidance. Lately, I find myself listening to, and occasionally laughing with, Garrison Keillor's "A Prairie Home Companion." This practice strikes me as being dangerously pro-social and i concerned that will lead to other nonaberrational or conformist activities, such as playing or, worse, watching golf, etc. Is there anything I can do?Signed,There's a Punk in My Past
Grown Up all Right, you mean. Banging tunes, comprehensive notage and wicked cover art. Hemizen has it right.
Another stellar addition to this great series. Thanks for the links as well!
The Ohio Express did me 'all wrong' when their van plowed into my car in Lincoln, Nebraska once long ago. It was not a Yummy, Yummy, Yummy day.
Great series, great notes, great mix. I'm going to try to remember to wish you a happy birthday on time this year...
Ditto Mohr! Top Knotch! Oh & great cover btw!
Zerfas am be good! So is this mix!!!
