Comment:

I've been reading the biography 'Nick Drake' by Patrick Humphries and as I am want to do kept notes for a potential mix as I went along.

1)Opens with Desafinado a track that the young Nick Drake would play on clarinet whilst at Marlborough public school.
2)Nick had a band at school & this was one of their cover versions, Teagardens' take on what is a superb song is one of my favourites.
3)Bond's album 'The Sounds Of 65' was a favourite of Nicks.
4)A track from another of the young Nick Drake's favourite albums. Comparisons with Dylan were a burden that Drake inevitablysuffered from. Drake's lyrics simply weren't in the same league as Bob's.
5)Nick & friend sneaked out of Marlborough and were in the audience when it was announced that this track had reached "1 in Britain.
6)Nick first visited France in 1965, his song writing style would be influenced by Chanson's air of melancholy world weariness.
7)Nick opened for label mates Fairport Convention at the Royal Festival Hall 1969, when they showcased material from their seminal album Leige & Lief.
8)Another of Drake's label mates.
9-10) Both artists from whom Nick drew inspiration.
11)McTell played the same folk circuit as Nick.
12)The Thopmson's were friend's of Drake &at one time Nick had a brief relationship with the then Linda Peters.
13)Chapman went to see Drake play and after the gig invited Nick back to his place where the 2 spent the night jamming.
14)Drake was fascinated by Renbourns guitar playing.
15)Jansch had a big impact on the teenage Nick Drake. Nick made a home recording of this track.
16)Joe Boyd produced Drake's first 2 albums and somewhat took him under his wing. Boyd formed a production company called Witchseason, the name being inspired by this track.
17)Cale guests on Drakes second album 'Bryter Layter' Nick's influence can be heard on Cale's album Paris 1919.
18)Johnson's blues are desolate and windswept. Drake believed that he too hada 'Hell Hound On His Trail.' i.e. 'Black Eyed Dog.'
19)It was rumoured that Nick had a relationship with Hardy, though she denies this claiming she was attracted to the artist more than the man.
20)Martyn has said,"Solid Air was done for a friend of mine & it was done right with very clear motives." Apparently the song was written after Martyn & Drake quarreled.
21) Simply my favourite Nick Drake song, a tune I never tire of listening to.
For those who may be interested, I've a second volume of this mix containing some other great tunes but in the end I decided to keep the mix just a single edition. Oh & the title of the mix comes from a quote from Nick's sister Gabrielle, describing her brothers'sensitive nature.

Wow, super work and excellent history set to music! I didn't know all those connections. And since it is based on a book, of course I've added a copy to the shelves of The Reading Room Annex - check it out at AOTM Exhibits. WTG Cliff.

I am not a Nick Drake fan and probably never will be, but this is obviously a masterpiece and reeks of expertise.

I love that the jazz co-mingles with the folk in this beautiful portrait. Is the drawing his? Or yours?

Somehow missed this one a couple of days ago Cliff - sorry about that! But this is absolutely lovely and well thought-out. So many picks that I really love, including the opener, Francoise Hardy, John Martyn and John Renbourn. Also showed me that I don't know nearly enough about Mr. Drake - the notes were a really interesting read.
