Be Sure To Wear Flowers In Your Hair: San Francisco '67-'69 (2 discs)
Comment:
With the exception of the opening track (an ode to SF from an LA folkie), the rest culls the highlights of the San Francisco scene, late '60's. Obviously some of this is more prototypical Summer of Love music than the rest -- Sly a bit too tight & funky, Creedence (more an East Bay band than an SF act) a bit too, er, swampy -- but it gives a nice picture of the overall vibe. While the Dead and the Airplane (and of course Janis) get most of the kudos, I think Spirit, Moby Grape, Kaleidoscope and the (early) Steve Miller Band had some outstanding (and in many cases better) music at the time.
Feedback:
Did someone say "comprehensive" to Pop Kulcher? Now look what you've done. Another concept/theme nailed. (Bows low and backs out through door very slowly). Now where did I park my Bug?
Damn you and your flawless, jaw-dropping mixes! I always feel like the Salieri to your Mozart (only I'm not even Salieri talented - I just suck) - perpetually driven to tears of equal part admiration and envy. I love soaking in your work, even while I secretly wish to destroy you in a jealous rage. No, I aspire to your mix-making abilities, I do. I don't even like Santana, but you make it work wonders here
Yep- comprehensive and cool. And it's about the only period of the Dead that I like.
I love this stuff. See Steve Mossholder's two "Lights Out San Francisco" mixes for another take on the city.
Very nice.
Extremely well done.
excellent history lesson, pop!... don't think I could improve on it.
Beautiful!
Great ode to the place! I love it. The first time I was ever in SF (with my parents) in 1971 I recall heaing a lot of the first CCR album whilst in the back seat of the rental car. "99 and half (just won't do)", "I Put a Spell on You", and Susie Q will always transport me back to that first magical visit to the Bay Area. The Cannery was very hip (and non-ordinary commercial) at the time, with little galleries etc. No Electric Prunes or Blue Cheer? - or were they not Bay Area? Nice mix!
Yes -- Steve Mossholder has done some fine SF-themed mixes as well (and has been kind enough to share them with me).
Correct, Steve, Blue Cheer were a San Francisco-based band; I ended up leaving them (as well as the Charlatans and Mystery Trend) on the cutting room floor, as all I had from each of them were tracks on the Nuggets box, and they didn't quite mesh with the vibe here. (Electric Prunes came out of LA -- but never fear: I'm planning an LA '60's mix shortly, with the Doors, Love, Byrds, Buffalo Springfield, etc.)

Great collection of classic music from a classic city.
Ditto George. THe current scene right now is pretty impressive too.
Great time and place.
I really like the look of this. A great tribute, my friend.
The first time I visited San Francisco was in 1995 and I walked from Chinatown to Haight Ashbury. I just thought it was such a cool city. So much great music, partcularly the late 1960s, as you have captured so well.
Pretty much sums up an era - even little old me has visited San Francisco - I threw up on the cable car (lol)...great stuff!
Fine work once again, my hippie friend. Every copy should come with a flower. You're so lucky to live a few blocks away from Haight-Ashbury
Salivating over this one. Never been to SF but plan to one day.
Alas, Ion, my days of living in the cool parts of the city are well behind me... just another suburban lawyer/dad these days.
classic
I'm lighting the incense and, how you say, dyeing my tie, right now in honor of this groovy mix. Very atmospheric of time & place.
San Francisco '67 to '69 was a prolific time/place musical experience . . . . possibly the second most prolific time/place musical experience ever (the most prolific being Dom1's house 2005 to 2006) . . . I wonder what changed and why it isn't now? Great stuff . . . . I would love to have been there . . . .
