Comment:
Here's a tribute to the '80s New Wave Follow-Up Flop. These were all released as follow-up singles to (at least moderate) new wave hits of the 1980s, but unlike their predecessors, these songs failed to make much of an impact on the U.S. singles charts (some of these fared better in England, Germany, etc.). On the bright side, most tracks listed here have been spared the humiliating fate of being recycled for decades to come in order to sell automobiles, long-distance telephone service and Coca-Cola. [All tracks were recorded from original '80s 7" U.S. releases, except Nena's, which was recorded from the 12" single.] [These are all 2nd single releases from their respective albums, with two exceptions: the Til Tuesday/Falco tracks were 3rd single releases; "Looking Over My Shoulder" was too long to fit at the end of side one and I didn't want to put "Vienna Calling" on my mix. plus, that song was moderately popular, while "Jeanny," which is actually much better, did nothing on the charts.][9/17/2007 - ala RetroJoe, I'm adding the year and peak chart position from the U.S. Billboard Hot 100. -tz-]
Feedback:
Haahahahah! This is REALLY FUNNY. I think you really nailed it. If I may add one critique, a very good opener would have been Let's Go To The Disco by the Disco Brothers, but like I said, I think you already nailed it. It's a great great great idea.
A great idea for a mix this. Some good tracks on here.
If I may...in the U.K 'Two Tribes' spent 9 weeks at number 1 in the summer of 1984. 'Gold' was huge over here and is still played in cheesy nightclubs everywhere. 'I Don't Wanna Dance' was a bigger hit than 'Electric Avenue'. And The Paul Young, Moyet & Human League tracks also fared well over here. As for 'The Celtic Soul Brothers' it should have been as huge as 'Come On Eileen'.

All the lesser-known (and hence less annoying, as you say) songs by these popular '80s bands - I can't believe I've never seen this done before. Not so much clever as refreshing - a DIFFERENT Dexy's MR tune? Who'da thought? For my money, that Taco cover is even better than "Ritz", and I'm surprised many of these weren't as catchy with mass audiences as their counterparts. "Love Action" is easily as good as "Don't You want Me" - damn you, fickle public! However, in the vein of sammyg's "if I may", over in my corner, Spandau Ballet and even more perplexingly "Europa and the Pirate Twins" are still radio staples. Weird.
Great idea for a mix. In some cases these records (or at least the ones I recognize) were as good as the hits they followed. Funny how the market works.
Is your cover art a socio-physiological representation of popularity as random germination? Or is this just a mix of good tunes that should have fared better in the public arena? As a former latter, I remain steadfastly in the centre of the fence.
cover art: each is a song, competing for the number one spot on the charts. but only one will penetrate this coveted position, giving birth to a hit that will. oh never mind. the art is random. Helmut Berger's phone call has nothing to do with the songs' popularity. it's just a set of good tunes that should have fared better in the public arena (except for that Toni Basil track).
Fun and clever idea for a mix. Especially like Love in a Vacuum, the Blow Monkeys (was their first hit Digging Your Scene?) and the Human League (which I liked more than Don't You Want Me to Want Me)
This is AMAZING! But isn't it possible for two songs to occupy the coveted number one spot at the same time? I think it happened in 1989 with 'Buffalo Stance' and 'Every Rose Has Its Thorn'. And it would certainly explain Thomas Dolby's "Europa and the Pirate Twins" -- they must be fraternal. On a lighter note, Helmut Berger can sell me long distance telephone service anyday.
This is great. I've been diggin' the 80s a lot recently, and I shall have to look into some of these tunes.
Really great stuff here. Having had to listen to the "New Wave Flashback" station on the satellite radio @ my job in the morning EVERY morning for the last few years, I'm subjected to the same old '80s hits day after day. This looks like a breath of fresh air to me and includes stuff I'm actually not sick to death of hearing. Nice one.
A bold and worthy exercise
A mix full of imagination.
Geez, the hits keep on coming on the boards, recently.
I am painfully out of touch regarding this style of music, but what I don know I dig, immensely.

I've been meaning to check out some post-Ritz Taco. Is the Musical Youth track the original version of Rick Astley's "Never Gonna Give You Up"? I hope so.
Love Action pisses all over Don't You Want Me. As for Dexy's, they had a lot of hits over here (UK) but their best singles were the ones that under performed in the charts : Dance Stance, Plan B, Show Me, There There My Dear (no.7, but should have been no.1). Two Tribes was huge here, spent more weeks at no.1 than Relax. I have to admit that the majority of these artists send a shiver of horror down my spine but then my musical coming of age decade was the 70's.
