Comment:

Finally got round to this, a lot later than intended.
Plenty of twang, a handful of R'n'B / soul stylings and the inevitable Beatles covers. But as far as I'm concerned, the best thing about this is that it features the AOTM debut of Bert Weedon. For those out of the loop, ol' Bert was quite simply THE most important guitarist Britain has ever produced; not for anything he played, but for what he wrote. His guitarist's manual "Play In A Day" was mandatory reading for every (and I do mean EVERY) would-be string-plucker in the late 50's / early 60s. When it comes to electric guitar playing, he literally wrote the book. Without him, rock'n'roll would have souded very different. [And also, another plushpig tip of the hat to Russ Conway, the English Liberace, who's cheesy, kitschy barrelhouse tinklings I'm developing a wholly unwarrented fondness for of late -my God, what's happening to me??]

Oh & by the way, Track 18 isn't really by Janice Nicholls. It's an uncredited bunch of sessioners. The track appeared on the flip of an exploitation single cashing-in on the popularity of Ms Nicholls who shot to fame as a result of her appearances on the Saturday tea-time pop show "Thank Your Lucky Stars". She was a Birmingham teenager deemed typical of her generation who passed judgement on the weeks releases. When something particularly tickled her ear, she announced in a broad Brummy accent that "Oi'll give it foive". The first time she appeared, the country went mad and she carved out a brief but fondly remembered career. And you though Bart Simpson as the "I didn't do it" boy was far-fetched.....
