File this under: Another mix made so I can box up some of the crap I never listen to that's cluttering up my CD racks. Honestly, I don't think I've listened to this band in a decade, and probably never listened to the last 2 albums more than once or twice. (Nor, for that matter, have I had much use for Bjork's solo career.) That said, their 1988 debut sounds pretty good today (80's style overproduction notwithstanding). "Birthday" remains one of the most unforgettable vocal performances in a rock song, and several other tunes ("Deus," "Coldsweat") hold up surprisingly well. Unfortunately, there was a big drop-off after that. Not that they didn't still have some decent tunes and interesting musicianship... they just let that annoying Einar guy bark his ridiculous guttural noises in way too many songs, distracting from Bjork's distinctive pipes. I actually saw the band live back in law school (with the Primitives, another forgotten late 80's band, opening), and I still remember wanting to kill the guy (and, maybe I was imagining things, but I thought Bjork looked like she wanted to kill him, too). The third and final album, in 1992, was a bit better (i.e. less Einar), but also lacking the novelty of the first one. Still, there were enough decent songs on these albums (particularly "Regina" on the former and "Hit" on the latter) to make for a pretty good mix, albeit one I can't see spinning all that often.

This looks good to me, although I can't remember the last time I listened to anything other than the sublime "Birthday"...

Well now, despite your lack of enthusiasm for the subject matter, this mix is fabulous. I have to admit you're right about "that annoying Einar guy"; but Bj÷rk more than makes up etc."Nor, for that matter, have I had much use for Bj÷rk's solo career." -- Ouch! -- Hey, it's all about opinions and personal taste, nonetheless, ouch!So there you have it, Pop, you rascal -- even when you can't be bothered -- you still cut it. I bet you were that kid at school who was good at everything. Hey, I'm not bitter, mediocrity suits me -- no, really.

Sweet mix! Yes, I wanted to kill that Einar guy too. He was like the Fred Schneider of the Sugarcubes. I find it annoying when bands with a perfectly good female vocalist allow the man to sing. My Sugarcubes CDs are collecting dust as well, but I agree that most of the songs you've included here are the cream of the crop. Whatever happened to Bjork anyway?

Moe's comment on Einar is funny as a friend would always same the say thing. How is that for irritating speech? I don't usually comment on a single artist mix but this is one I can. I am pleased Speed Is The Key is included but disappointed that Dear Plastic isn't. However, the biggest problem is that the mix claims there are only three albums when there were actually four. The version of Gold from the fourth would have gone very well with this especially considering that Gold wasn't included. As for Einar, the version of Regina from the fourth album (which is the actual Sugarcubes preferred version) would have sent listeners running for covers.
