Comment:
Ironically the most famous piece of music attributed to John Barry was in fact composed by Monty Norman who scored the first James Bond, Dr No. I say first but in truth it was not the first James Bond to appear on a screen. That honour went to Casino Royale, transmitted live on U.S. TV. starring Barry Nelson as Bond with Peter Lorre as the bad guy. Back to Barry and the Bond Theme. There are in fact 2 themes, `The James Bond Theme' (appears in Dr No) and the `James Bond Theme' - the former was written by Monty Norman and that is not in dispute. The `James Bond Theme' (please notice the difference) which is the famous theme we all know and love is credited to Monty Norman who claims Barry was hired only to arrange what he had already composed. Another version is John Barry was hired for a flat fee to ghost write the theme and forfeit all credit to Monty Norman, Dr. No's contracted composer. Barry has always said that Monty Norman was never asked to return to score another Bond movie. The gist of this appeared in an article in The Sunday Telegraph and resulted in Monty Norman suing The Sunday Telegraph for defamation of character, saying that he had been defamed as taking credit (and the royalties) for a song that he never wrote. In court Barry admitted that the JB Theme vamp was in parts Artie Shaw's `Nightmare' & the guitar riff originated in a Norman compsition `Bad Sign - Good Sign'. The Jury found in favour of Monty Norman. Whatever the truth is, I think the theme owes it's success to John Barry whose style is a trademark all of it's own.
Anyway, this mix includes secret agents galore, some like OK Connery (starring Neil Connery, Sean's brother as well as many of The Bond regulars) are Bond Spoofs and others like The Prisoner have carved out a separate identity. What they all have in common is that it is unlikely they would have been made without the initial success of Ian Flemming's James Bond.
Feedback:
truly magnificent, Dom1. as an undercover 007 fan, I could go on and on. but I'll just say that I'd love to hear that Ann-Margret/Dionne Warwick tune, glad you put some U.N.C.L.E. in and I look forward to future volumes.
Absolutely top class mix this Dom. I try not to ever swear on AOTM, but Fuck Me this is good. 5 stars.
Nice. Very cool idea and execution, as always.
Great.
Viva Flint!
Good luck topping this one Dom!
good stuff . . . I wonder who the noughties equivalent of the sixties secret agent will be? Without a cold war, I guess we will never find out . . . maybe Bush is a secret agent fan and is looking to create another hero . . .
wow, if I could have this hmm
Great theme, this is awesome.
Superb as ever, Dom. Great notes.
i learned a lot! now if you can only explicate 'thunderball' and 'the mclory rights' that led to 'never say never again'!
I'm both stirred and shaken by this...wonderful goodness.
Still working on a spy/gangster themed mix as a response to your amazing series.
And is that artwork or do my eyes deceive!?

I fear your head may one day explode Dom as it seems to be packed with limitless anectodes and trivia and of course the musical expertise to tie it all together. Bravo again.
I bow to your knowledge, skills and wisdom. FINE mix...
Terrific. Just sweet as can be.
Dom, you never cease to amaze. Well done.
This looks like great fun.
DAMN this looks great; I just know I'd play this to death. It's this kind of mix that really makes me frustrated you don't have a cd burner...
An E-type mix from an E-type mixer!
Great as always. Great call on the Ann Margret!
Very nice stuff, as ever. The Jackie Mittoo's a great choice - like the Hugh Montenegro too, and good liner notes!
