I smoke my cigarette with style.
Comment:
No, you're not hallucinating. I compiled a Guns N' Roses mix. I've actually wanted to do this for a long time, as their first album (and Lies, to a degree) has always had a special place in my heart, reminding me of the summer of '88--I was 17 and having the time of my life and they provided the soundtrack--but was not willing to actually buy the records on disc to do so (thanks to my friends who provided the CDRs that I used for this). To me, Axl is an irredeemably loathable jackoff, but I can't help but embrace these tunes. There were even a few others that had to be cut: "One in a Million" (great tune, completely redneck, offensive lyrics), "Don't Cry," "Double Talkin' Jive," "Civil War," and "Yesterdays."Feedback:
Ahh, this is heaven! Track 9 especially.
As Dennis Miller said "Axl has still got chops.... I heard him singing the other day while he was cleaning my neighbor's pool."
Ouch! Not for me Rob, i've got three allergies in music Bono, Axl, and Meatloaf. I can tolerate just about anything else. I'm sure however that this is great, no I cant lie Im pretty sure its not. Im not dissing, one mans meat and all that...
Sad that "Civil War" couldn't make it but at least it was a candidate. Ditto "Don't Cry". This is a personal mix so I've no right to make suggestions, but those 2 should have replaced the too-well-known-and-hence-unnecessary "Welcome to the Jungle" and "Sweet Child of Mine". But oh well. You got "Locomotive", "Rocket Queen", and the undisputably great tracks 1 and 5, so I'm a pleased GNR fan. Nice to see someone as esteemed as you honoring them; if, say, I were to do it, it would just be pathetic. So thanks. As to your comments, all I can say is Indeed! to everything (them being a summer soundtrack, Axl being a douche, "One in a Million" bordering on criminally wrong). Keep it up!
Civil War is a great one, for sure. Appetite For Destruction is the first CD I ever bought, so I still think of it fondly :)
nice! when "Appetite For Destruction" came out I was living in Provo, Utah. I got a copy on vinyl (w/ the original cover) and I thought it was the greatest thing I'd ever heard. haven't listened to it in years; I'll have to dust it off and give it a spin.
Having gone to Purdue (hometown to Axl and Izzy) and being familiar with a couple of the places which were the genesis for some of their better tunes (Paradise City & Mr. Brownstone)...and being weened onto bass via the styles of Duff McGagen, this band will always have a place in my heart. And, there is simply no denying the sheer strength of their debut album. But, all that taken into consideration...this band and it's players have been THE biggest disappointment in music within the last 20 years. If not that, they definately have spot in the top three "letdowns" in my book.
Wow...really stellar mix and OTM with pretty much all of your comments,my friend. I've got a real soft spot for the band, as well. One of the few bands my little brother and I saw eye to eye on back in the day. I'm pretty sure he even got a chance to see them at a small club [The Agora?, I can't remember] up in Cleveland way before Appetite broke in a big way. I'll have to give him a call and get the details again. Man, one of the best shows I EVER saw was G'n'R @ the Richfield Coliseum about 6 months before the "Use Your Illusion" discs came out. Fucking amazing. Too bad Axl had to piss it all away by being such an asshole. Anyways, great mix. :-)
Made high school dances bearable. But high shool was 20 years ago, and with the memories stays the music, thank god. Still, 5, 7 and 9 make me tingle like a schoolboy. Damn those psychological associations that have not a whit to do with taste!
Wow - not one I'd expect to see from you, Rob, but looks really good nonetheless. I do think that most of us have a real soft spot for G'n'R (if not Mr Rose himself) - although I wouldn't describe myself as a fan of the genre, I definitely have a copy of Appetite For Destruction kicking around :) Good notes too.
Fuckin YEAH. 'Appetite' stirs some pretty strong memories for me too Rob: Dallas, the mall, building a skate ramp, the sun going down over the creek, having a crush on Melanie whatever-her-surname-was...
I'm not a fan of "the gunners" but I understand what you're saying.
Brings back memories of the summer of '92, teaching english in Spain and being asked by a 10 year old to translate some of the lyrics of "One in a Million." Boy, those were the days!
Well done Rob. One of my favorite bands. Though the superband that Slash has formed Velvet Revolver is I think better than the Guns. Way to go for putting Nightrain and Mr. Brownstone. Two of my alltime favorite songs.
this is soooo wrong IMHO! But each to their own . . . we all have our guilty pleasures . . . not sure if I am as brave as you though . . . I'll probably keep mine to myself.
'sweet child o' mine' was among my earliest purchases on '45. classic !
You're going to hell for this, buddy, no doubt about it. But, ok, I too have some associations with that first album, as it played a bit in the college dorm senior year -- "Jungle," "Child" and "Paradise" were all part of my consciousness at the time. I remember when the album first came out, and a friend of mine, who was primarily into the basic college radio jangle pop of the day, swore that the band was great and they'd be huge; we all laughed.
Chinese Democracy is shaking in its lotus shoes.
Sweet - am being transported back in time to being 14, surly sneaking cigarettes with giant old school headphones clamoed to my greasy mop!!! That's good btw :-)
Is this an April Fool's Day joke?
By the way, I didn't mean that as an insult...but I did wonder how serious you were about this mix, given the date it was posted.
This is a pretty awesome GN'R mix, I acutally think i had one that is almost exaclty like this though hahhaha.
