Comment:
A few years ago, I translated a book by James Ellroy called "Hollywood Nocturnes" which, among other stories, featured the novella "Dick Contino's Blues", in which JE spins a fictitious yarn about the LA accordion virtuoso and veteran Z-movie actor being involved in a scam during which, as usual with Ellroy, many a poor sucker gets killed and Contino wins the busty, great-lookin' dame in the end. In one of the best scenes a down-home fucked-up 'n gun-toting Spade Cooley figures rather prominently. So for a couple of years I kept looking for Contino's records but couldn't find any. When I finally located an old Rhino comp featuring the track included here at the library two months ago, I decided to devote a little mix to the squeeze box, although I must admit it doesn't really rank among my favorite instruments. So here's the result which is by no means comprehensive. There's no Eastern European stuff (simply cuz I don't own any or would have had to cull stuff from mixes I got from some of you) and nothing from the Middle or Far East, but there's a fair amount of polka, tango, cajun, zydeco, folk, reggae, dub, jazz, e-z listening and even a bit of weirdness to hopefully keep it entertaining. Enjoy - and read "Dick Contino's Blues"!
Feedback:
Excellent stuff, this looks like a hell of a musical adventure.
wonderful, my father plays the accordion but mostly Swedish stuff, like Kjell Kraghe, Pepparn and Gnesta Kalle
Very cool.
This one looks like a real fun listen; good title.
Read and loved the book. Great idea for a mix.
This mix looks great, even without Schwyzer÷rgeli.
I love the accordian! it's so... unusual and looks like such fun to play. Jo Ann Castle rocks! (if possible w/ the squeezebox) one of my favorites missing here is Charles Magnante. but who cares; this looks incredible!
Like the Buckwheat, Mamou Playboys and love Chenier and Astor Piazolla. In a turn I could never have seen for myself, I now play in a band that has 2 accordian players (we wear matching outfits too!)
Looks fascinating.
The accordion has become traditional in Cajun music, but its roots are not real deep; the Cajuns picked it up from German musicians here in the US, and adopted it.
"Ode To Cleavage" sounds like a great theme for a song. Mama's got a squeezebox she wears...? But the 'tit in "Ma 'tit fille" is just Cajun shorthand for "petit" or "petite."
Very interesting.
Wow, this seems like one really interesting listening experience.
You've got my attention. I'd love to hear this.
Lady of Spain! Spade Cooley! and Hey!
This looks like so much fun, it makes me wish
we could straighten out that e-mail snafu & get some more transatlantic trades
going.
My accordion sampler is much kitschier than yours, but oh man would I like
to be able to offer
Accordion Without Tears in exchange for this one. Any chance?

damn. thats neat.
Wheeeeeee! Too cool.
Looks fabulous -- accordian' to me (okay, I said the same thing on joey's mix - but you gotta admit it's pretty damn hysterical.) Nice to see the squeezebox being utilized by contemporary artists, since it's got a bit of an unhip reputation. Cover is marvelous too. Five stars!
I love this, and a great excuse to get the Pogues, Grace Jones, and and Clifton Chenier together in one place! Hot dog.
Ah, "Schultze Gets the Blues" and goes to Berlin where he meets a translator-of-merit working on a mix devoted to the accordion. A lot of good stuff here Thomas. (No Brave Combo?)
Very nice. Once I got passed the polka stuff I wouldn't remember where to look for accordian music in my collection.
Extremely cool and I am extremely envious of the brain behind the cover. Dat's a good vun.
You are a very clever man. I am enlightened and entertained -- and that's without even hearing this mix -- now atsa some nifty.
Evenin' Sir, due to personal problems I missed this mix so apologies...as ever an original, interesting mix..& well designed cover..pleased to see The Big Easy sndtrck got a work out!
Hi
4,000,000 Telephones here,I thought you might like to know that the telephones have re-released the original album on cd, including cereal commercial, on Summerhouse records. We loved the idea of being included in your mix, just wondered where you heard of us from. Keep well,
Richard

COME BACK, PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Now that I've listened to this mix several times I can say that it pushes all the right buttons for me. The opening track is the only one I wouldn't want to listen to over and over. All the other picks are inspired, and they work so well together. I love the straight-forward polkas as much as the more on-the-edge stuff (9, 16, 20-22), and the stylistic contrasts make this a very stimulating satisfying listening experience. Any chance that you will issue a second volume?
