The Foghat Rule: Your 4th Album Must Be Double Live
Comment:
2 cd's, all tracks live. I've done this before as a bootleg sampler, but this time around all the tracks come from official live albums (or bonus tracks on reissues, box sets, etc.). As I don't have a decent burning program with cross-fading, I had to manually edit the tracks to avoid abrupt segues, always an issue when mixing live tracks. It was a huge pain in the a**, so I think I'll hold off awhile before venturing into volumes 3 & 4.The title, by the way, is cribbed from the video for Yo La Tengo's "Sugarcube," undoubtedly the funniest video ever, in which Bob and Dave of Mr. Show send our naive indie rockers to Rock School, where they learn, among other things, The Foghat Rule: Your fourth album must be double live!!! (If you haven't seen the video, check it out at Youtube.com.)
Feedback:
Fantastic. Love all The picks.
Looks live-ly. I wonder whether that rule applies to one's fourth mix as well?
Great fucking stuff. And the fact that you even HAVE a live Long Ryders cut is too cool. Big thumbs up on the Dumptruck, FoW, and the Hitchcock - which is one of his finest moments. I hardly ever put live cuts on mix discs, but I should really reconsider.
I've put off making a collection of live cuts for the very reason you mention - the abrupt starts and endings would be real annoying. And I don't have the mindframe to edit. So I'll have to hold out for software/hardware that lets me crossfade. I commend you for you your dedication.

Great-looking mix. I'm thinking back to Steppenwolf, and wondering if their double live was their fourth. I had it in a place far, far away. On the software, I have a Nero version that is a couple of years old, and the ability to cross-fade is acceptable. I think the longest fade is maybe 20 seconds, and about double that is more desirable. Try Nero. I am surprised to count 12 of your listed artists on my "seen them live" list.
Great stuff!
A Pop Kulcher "Fantasy Festival Mix"? I did the counting myself and have 10 on my "seen them live" list. Although The Stones, The Pixies and Television were all in the last 4 years, and the Buzzcocks in the last 10, so hardly in their prime. Great mix.
Fun Stuff. I tied Sam with 10 seen 'ems. (Should have been 11 but Zep cancelled on me twice.)
Wonderful mix. It's great fun to do these live mixes.
Wow... hadn't thought to count the ones I'd seen live, but put me down for 16. Sure wish Joy Division and the Clash were on that list, though.
Fun theme - nice selections. Diggin' the video.
Excellent idea! I'm guessing the effort was worth the pain of execution, to hear your baby play when it was all done. I love bands that sound great live.
P.S. Hey, it was #16 for me, too -- the mid-'90s reunion tour. (It was sold out, so my buddy who opened for them wrote me and a female friend into his contract as go-go girls, we got paid in beer tickets, and it was great to see the mellowing first-wavers in attendance & to smoke up with the headliners!)
It's a great video, and this is a great mix! Dare me to say great once more? Already done!
exceptional!!! I am a believer in 'the crossfade' so let me know if I could assist to make your next iteration less arduous
Brilliantly done and that video is hysterical, I almost choked on my Easter egg!
Wot, no Kansas?
as with all of your other mixes, this one is really lovely. :)
Wondeful. Wonderful.
"I don't have a decent burning program with cross-fading". You surprise me, given your knowledge and the sheer joy you have for music. I would have expected you to have all the tools necessary for smooth mix creation. It's a shame, because this excellent "live" experience would scale the proverbials... Nonetheless, it looks like a thoroughly enjoyable gig. Thanks for the link :)
Hilarious concept and great execution.
AWESOME. Great picks here - especially dig the Long Ryders tune. This would be one amazing live show to see.
