Comment:

This mix was inspired by Pop Kulcher's fine Mott comp (Mr. Kulcher was also quite helpful in providing many of these tracks) posted not so long ago. Despite the uneven quality of their output, narrowing this down to one disc was rough. Plenty of classics got cut, the most regrettable being "Sucker," "Sweet Angeline," "Roll with the Stone," "Road to Birmingham," "Honaloochie Boogie," "Angel of Eighth Avenue," "Hymn for the Dudes," and "Sea Diver." One thing, though: although most folks seem to (justifiably, in my opinion) prefer Mott to All the Young Dudes, I'm wondering if I'm alone in also preferring Brain Capers and their debut to that album. Any thoughts?

Nice to see your take on this material, Rob, and your summary captures the band quite accurately. Some of the finest songs of the classic rock era, but some pretty uneven albums nonetheless. And, yes, while I give Mott a slight edge, that's largely because "Memphis" and "Honaloochie" are so great that they carry the album. Brain Capers is certainly as strong (though again because it's carried by a couple fantastic songs, primarily "Santa"). And I, too, really loved the first album, but it's almost the work of a different band -- the Dylan-inspired stuff is pretty moving (especially "Backsliding"), though for mixing purposes I didn't use much of it because it doesn't fit in as well with the band's later work.

Nice one, though I honestly know only a couple of these. Does that make me a bad person?

Mott doesn't have enough great songs to make a double disc, but with a single you're gonna miss a few essentials. Nicely done though.
