Reginald Dwight must live! Disc one, compiled for at my wife's request, consists of the big guns of EJ's pre-1980 career. Disc two, some more obscure faves. I know, I know ... Elton's albums, while featuring brilliant singles, have some of the worst, most-dated production of any 70s artists. Yes, there's schlock.... And yet there are the singles.... I still remember my cousin hipping me to Elton in the early 70s - he seemed so cool, so other wordly, so mystical.... Anyway, I still play air-piano to "Bennie and the Jets", and I bet you do, too. (Two cd's, if'n you care.)Feedback:
Great title track. Great mix.
Disc 1 has tons of great choices (although "Mona Lisas," my favorite track, is on Disc 2), although I don't get the appeal of that Kiki Dee duet, "Crocodile Rock" and (especially) "Island Girl." I'm not too fond of most of the "obscure" tracks that you've chosen, bar "Mona Lisas" and "Sixty Years On," but hey, that's why we make our own mixes. :-) (I'm not sure if you're familiar with my "Rose trees never grow in New York City" mix from a few years ago, but I'd be interested in hearing your take on it.)
I do still love a lot of his early stuff, but opine that he shot his wad (metaphorically)a long time ago. But when Dwight was Right, he WAS the 70's.
Alas, when I posted my Elton John [& Billy Joel] Must Die mix of piano music a couple weeks back, I kinda meant it. Never liked Elton, never will. Not even as a guilty pleasure. I just find his songs and his singing really grating. One exception -- "Rocket Man," which is pretty amazing any way you cut it. (And I guess I don't mind "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road.") I'll probably check out some of the tunes on cd 2 to see if I'm missing something else I like, but the singles? Not for me.

I make no apology for my love of early Elton and came to him in the early '70s, like you, via the influence of a cousin (along with Mott the Hoople, Bowie, etc.). Great stuff Sean.
Interesting, I just traded for an Elton John comp recently and found that I'm still quite fond of alot of the singles (now that I am no longer bombarded with them on radio). Brings back fun memories of a soon to be mis-spent youth.
