Comment:

Not much to mix here, as the Roses built their reputation largely on the basis of a single album. But oh what an album it was -- the immortal '89 self-titled debut, which managed to rise above like-minded psychedelic-retro Europop/dance bands of the late '80's (see, e.g., Charlatans UK, Ride, etc.) and set up the whole Europop revival of the 90's (Oasis, Blur, Pulp, etc.). Alas, contract disputes and other problems kept them out of the limelight for another five years, by which time their star had faded. Most of this is drawn from that album and the excellent collection of singles & b-sides (Complete Stone Roses). The balance (the last 5 tracks) comes from the belated follow-up, which should be hated on general principles -- nobody, hype or no hype, should name a long-awaited sophomore effort Second Coming and expect to escape ridicule. That said, the album was far less terrible than most critics would have you believe -- at worst, it was just kinda dull and irrelevant, but there was some excellent guitar work and a few remnants of the stellar psych-pop melodies that made the debut so wonderful. (There's also a hard-to-find collection of early tracks, Garage Flower, which is pretty great, but I didn't use any of it on the mix as it didn't really fit the vibe.)

Very cool indeed - I've always loved The Stone Roses (as long as I've been old enough to appreciate them, at least). I agree entirely with you on Second Coming - I dug it out recently and found it much less horrifying than I'd originally thought, although it did signal the beginning of John Squire's tendency to steer any subsequent project he was involved in towards one huge guitar solo! I'm glad you have I Wanna Be Adored on there - certainly my favourite SR song, if not one of my favourite songs, full stop, and Love Spreads is a nice ending. Good stuff!

I absolutely love these guys and think that Second Coming is massively underrated (I LOVE "Love Spreads," "Drivin' South," "Ten Storey Love Song," and "Break Into Heaven"). You managed to skip my favorite Stone Roses song ("Goin' Down"), but it's still a good colelction. I did one of these a few years ago (The past is yours but the future's mine). Lemme know what you think.

Over-rated...but who the hell isn't from Manchester or Liverpool... the Jackson Pollack tomfoolery betrayed their US influences...nevertheless Fools Gold is one of my favourite singles ever which is saying something & yeah I agree with kids below about Second Coming, it really wasn't too bad, no worse in fact than their debut.
