Comment:
And you thought Guns N' Roses was out-of-character? ;-) Bizarrely enough, I've been listening to these guys recently due to a used purchase of Reign in Blood about a month and a half ago. It's funny, I listened to a lot of thrash metal as an '80s teen, but never paid much attention to Slayer (I was more an Anthrax, early Metallica and early Megadeth guy). Now, after thoroughly enjoying the sonic fury of Reign in Blood, I snagged copies of their other key records--Hell Awaits, South of Heaven and Seasons in the Abyss--from a friend of mine and here is the result. I can't say I'll listen to it a lot, but it certainly satiates a specific type of music jones. Sure, the "Satanist"/macabre lyrics get old quickly, but the music is genuinely powerful, the production isn't bad (especially for '80s metal), and a couple of these songs (particularly "Angel of Death," "Spirit in Black," "Reborn," "Seasons in the Abyss," and their absolutely to-die-for reworking of "In-a-Gadda-da-Vida") are masterpieces of their genre. This one's for lo-fi jr, who expressed interest in hearing this when I finally got around to finishing it. Last tracks cut: "Live Undead" and "Temptation."Feedback:
Well, I give you tons of credit for finding value here. I appreciate the work, but I just don't think I could listen to too much. Cheers! (Some of the titles are pretty great though!)
How could anyone be ironic about this? Can't wait for the upcoming Anthrax and Megadeth mxs . . .
SLAYER!!! Sufficiently vile!
Wow, can't follow you over this cliff, Rob.
err, yeah.
Your outfit is magnificent tonight. And you know I always love you. And what is so great about you, is that you are you. Simon, what do you think?
Can't be certain but I think I once saw them, spent all the gig in the bar though, which pretty much says it all from me.
yikes.
Absolutely no idea who Slayer is or was.
I can't remember if I saw them opening for Motorhead or an early Metallica gig, but they were pretty devastating live. Never really thought the records lived up to that, but you're probably correct about the above average 80's metal production since unlike most of those bands you could actually hear some bass rumblings. I'm anxious to pop this into my deck after work sometime soon.
Pretty neat, sort of encapsulates their peak. Single artists compilations are a thrilling ride for the compiler, especially when you have the feeling of rediscovering that certain band or artist as you compile the tracks
I am going to stand by my general rule of never slagging something I've never really listened to. And in that spirit, all I can really muster is... yeah, cool song titles. (That said, I am willing to risk the accusations of having a closed mind by asserting that I cannot stand the entire genre of metal. Without exception, I truly hate it.)
It's the Metal weks on vh1. Lol gotta love this. Have you seen the Super group show. Heh, didn't know Jason Banoham was the drummer.
If you haven't got Dave Lombardo in your band... (private joke.) I'm just waiting for your Maiden mix Rob.
Dude! I was *trying* to compile a single disc Slayer collection and was tearing my hair out. I can't work it down from 85 minutes! I just can't! Kudos for the inclusion of "Kill Again" and "Necrophiliac." Those were both, sadly, cut from mine (but I did leave "Live Undead!")
Awesome. :)
Awesome. :)
