Comment:

Another out-of-character single-artist mix that I've been wanting to compile for years now. Thanks to the kindness of several friends, I was able to do so (I wouldn't actually purchase an AC/DC CD, although I have a few of these records on vinyl). I do believe to this day that this band (particularly during the Bon Scott era) is underrated by rock snobs and that their prime work ensures their permanent placement as one of the best hard-rock/near-metal bands, mostly due to Angus Young's singular guitar style/sound (what other hard-rock guitarist can you name that uses honest-to-goodness OPEN CHORDS rather than power chords to drive his songs?) and to Scott's gleeful, leering delivery whose oozing smarminess is still unmatched (in a good way, if that's possible) almost 30 years after his death. Several songs got cut: "Girl's Got Rhythm," "Shoot to Thrill," "You Shook Me All Night Long," "Go Down" and "Rock 'n' Roll Singer" were the most notable.

I so do not want to like this mix, but just reading the track list has got me mouthing the anthemic lyrics. Won't buy 'em but will sing along.

AC/DC is also on my list of long delayed single artist mixes. The only song I'd have to add would be "Thunderstruck", which is sort of just an AC/DC parody, but it's a damn cool one. Did you go with the studio Whole Lotta Rosie or the killer live version?

Oh for pity's sake. What is wrong with liking something and saying so. This mix is proof that "hipness" and "credibility" are sad shadows upon human nature. This band ROCK! If you like that, you'll love this. If you don't, you won't. Just go ahead and say so. I like it. Mutter, mutter, mumble...

Er, if you read my comments, that's exactly what I'm saying, Mr. Nomates.... In the meantime, Dale, I used the studio version. Despite the fact that the live version *is* great, I almost invariably prefer studio versions.

Well, slap me upside the head with a haddock. I can't even pass first year comprehension. I must try to be more circumspect. No wait, perhaps I should just shut the hell up. I'm trying....I'm really having a go at it...I may be able to succeed...if I concentrate...must focus...have to stop...almost got it...Oh bugger... Dash it all. I wasn't having a go at your good self, Mr. Conroy. I was merely relapsing into a general tirade -- a serious character flaw. I am addressing the problem -- but very slowly. I'll get there eventually. Maybe not in our lifetime -- but where's there a will, etc...

I pretty much hate AC/DC (still too much emotional damage from high school), but I must admit, you've got some real gems on here. Nice work.

I can listen to "Shot Down In Flames" and "Girl's Got Rhythm" anytime. Nice going Rob.

Am I right in thinking that AC/DC are pretty much the only band with a sizeable backcat NEVER to release a best of? I can't think of any others.. Anyhow if the boys ever decide to they should certainly contact you Mr Conroy. The sad ommision of GGR aside this is Bang-On!

No snobbery here. I even considered them punk rock early and still rank them alongside the heavier UK pubsters of the time. Later on they got a bit cartoony, I guess, but you've certainly hit all the essentials here. I might need this to further my son's rock education since we just finished the Black Sabbath catalog this weekend.

There are no bands that rock more than AC/DC. Riffs, killer guitar sound and solos, and total lunkhead lyrics. Why wouldn't you actually purchase a cd by this band? Just about any cd from the mighty Young brothers in their prime beats out 99% of other would-be "artists". Subtlety - there's no real need for it in rock and roll.

Even as a punk rocker in the year before dot! I always admired 'Whole Lotta Rosie.' A few years later I grew to loathe AC/DC but this was more a refection upon my opinion of their fans in the North East of England than the band themselves. Prefer Bon to Brian, though the ex-Geordie front man is a top bloke with a good set of pipes on him. Thanks for the memories Rob.

This is killer stuff. Once I got over my knee-jerk, adolescent rejection of all things metal in high school, I was happy to discover what a genuinely great band this is. Excellent picks.

Great stuff. The first Rolling Stone Record Guide gave all their albums a bullet -- signifying worthlessness. Subsequent editions upgraded them all to three stars or more. I especially like hearing "Hell's Bells," as it's played everytime the Padres' star reliever Trevor Hoffman takes the mound. Now where's Celine Dion's cover of "You Shook Me All Night Long"? ;)

Great stuff, Rob - I think that whatever your opinion of AC/DC, you can't fail to notice the rocking-out-ness of these tracks. Good for you for doing this.

Like Guns 'n' Roses and some of the other metal bands you've compiled, I have zero interest in buying their albums and little interest in hearing their music... yet when one of these songs comes on the radio, I can't turn it off. As observed below, one of the few bands with the commercial shortsightedness (or is it integrity?) never to release an actual Greatest Hits album, so for now you've got the market cornered. I may need to trade for this -- my son wants some AC/DC, and I don't really want to invest in any of the albums (which, best as I can tell, typically have 2 great songs and a lot of filler). Alas, no "Big Balls" here (an old fave from when I was a kid).
