Comment:

There was a programme about the summer of 67 on the TV a couple of weeks back. Predictably, when the topic turned to the Monkees, they received a unanimous badmouthing -the commercial darkside to the glory that was Sgt Pepper -you know the sort of thing. Rather than get hot under the collar, I set myself a challenge: "OK somehow over the years you've managed to accumulate not only nearly all the albums, but also 5 Best Of / Greatest Hit type compilations. Could you possibly get together a credible mix without using any of the compiled material?" Simplicity itself.

This is tremendous. It looks a lot like the Monkees mix I did back in early '02 ("My fingers are still burning from the last time")--not in a derivative way, mind you, just very similar picks from a similar mindset. I love this band and these tracks are a lot of the reason why. Tremendous work1

I think the best songs of the Monkees catalog stand up to the best songs by most of their contemporaries. And the fact that there are so many great songs on this mix within your rigid concept demonstrates that. "PO Box 9847", "Sweet Young Thing", and "You Told Me" are not only some of my favorite Monkees songs, they're some of my faves of the era. Nicely done.

A "Single Artist" Mix Of The Week! Who'd-a-thunk-it? And yet I cannot fault it. The definitive non-hit Monkees Mix. By George, I think you've got it! Well done! Thanks, I was wondering when I'd ever get to use all those exclamation marks I've been hanging on to.

I don't know why I've never thought to go out and buy a Monkees album, but this had certainly started that fire. Beatles Shmeatles! (A new and tasty treat.)

Nice selections. And I feel the need to post this (possibly) irrelevant Simpsons quote:
"The Monkees weren't about music, Marge. They were about rebellion and political and social upheaval!" - Marge's therapist.

The Monkees were my gateway drug into rock and roll, and the Head soundtrack remains a huge influence on me as well as my mixes (the eerie soundbytes between songs are cool). Door Into Summer probably defines my childhood better than any other song. Congratulations on MOTW.

clever! hey, peter's or micky's vocal on can you dig it. huh? huh? peter's voice has been so unjustly scoffed at. he sounded great on their records when they let him. funny dude, great speaking voice too.
