Comment:

Sure, we could go deep into the varied meanings of “O the Holly She Bears a Berry,” the Christmas traditional given a heartfelt go by Irish superstars the Chieftains. We could explore its pagan roots, and the Druid rites and symbols that morph and mingle all the way into that miraculous manger — but faith, friends! It’s Christmas! We’ll leave the research to the scholars and turn, instead, to the sublime swirl of the sacred and secular that is a Celtic Christmas. And so, our perfect Hibernian holidaze includes everyone from Sisters Kate & Anna McGarrigle, who lift voices in praise on the church-service beauty “Seven Joys of Mary,” to Dublin folk-rock heroes Horslips as they gather ’round the hearth for an acoustic heart-warmer to “Drive The Cold Winter Away,” to Celtic harpist Sue Richards as she plucks out her exquisite take on tradition “Simple Gifts/Jingle Bells.”
