Comment:
This one is the next installment of my burgeoning hip-hop series. At the time that his first four albums (the period covered by this mix) were released, Ice-T was at the vanguard of what was then the "new school" of hip-hop: gangster rap. Like other gangster rappers, Ice had a reputation for misogyny and profanity and dealt with a lot of violent themes; unlike others in his milieu, however, he often tempered his raps with positivity, encouraging other young black men to ignore the call of street life and to embrace real education. Although some of the "positivity" and strutting self-aggrandizement hasn't aged well and sounds a bit hokey, as do many of his overly simplistic backing tracks, most of these songs have stood the test of time. (And those that haven't are some pretty cool guilty pleasures). Thanks to Peter for a lot of this material (which I used to own on cassette, of all things).Feedback:
I played the grooves off of "The Iceberg" when it came out. Also dug OG at the time but haven't listened to him much in a long time. Revisiting these brings back some real specific times and places. Nice one.
haven't listen to Ice-T for ages but when you asked for this, I had to, and some of it still rock
Totally right to have Ice-T on cassette. Not actually so familiar with his stuff but you can't deny his iconic status. Looking forward to your next hiphop mixes Rob- who we got? Snoop? the Wu? Pharcyde?
Pretty good for a man called Tracy!
eh, i prefer his work on 'law and order: svu'.
"Colors" is still a top cut of mine (the whole damn soundstrack still sounds good) and you've all of my other faves except "The Girl Tried to Kill Me". I recently revisited all of these albums and agree that some of the lyrics and beats sound a bit silly now, but when Rhyme Pays (and the first BDP)came out I remember it made all the other rap I listened to at the time sound pretty mild.
Looks interesting...Have to check out ice-T. I dont know hes stuff very well.
Nice one! I loved Rhyme Pays back in the day (although my favorite Ice-T work would have to be his credited role as "Rap Talker" in the movie Breakin'. He does a song on the OST called "Reckless" that you might want to check out).
I'm down wit' it.
