Comment:

The purpose of this compilation was to emphasize the harsher and angstier elements of early 1980s Gothic Rock and Post Punk. Reluctant omissions include: Fields Of The Nephilim, Virgin Prunes, Specimen, Theatre Of Hate, Southern/Death/Cult, Xmal Deutschland, and The Mission.

You get 5 stars just for not including Bela Lugosi's Dead. Haha

Great mix

Bela Lugosi's Dead is a perfectly good record. But, oh dear, has it become a "Gothic" clichT whilst I was not looking. For shame. I would have welcomed its appearance on this excellent genre compilation. It's Sisters Of Mercy you have to wonder about.it was ever thus.

Major points for skipping the obvious selections from Joy Division, Siouxsie, etc. and concentrating on the unheralded gems.

I tried to pick only one song from each band, so only one Sisters. And as I said, wanted to emphasize the darker and harsher sides. "Marian" is probably their most atmospheric yet driving track. And in regard to "Bela," its length was an issue, and "Double Dare" is just so much more frightening. :) Thanks everyone!

Lots more crushed velvet goodness here, and yeah some Nephilim wouldnt be out of place.

By the way, if you were to add Xmal Deutschland, then my vote goes to the song "Polarlicht." A personal favorite. By the way, thanks for the nice comments on my own mixes. Like me you seem to also have been damaged by the '80s.
