Comment:

This mix is essentially an accounting of a little under half of the tracks that I've downloaded since getting a decent computer (with a good connection) in April and is designed almost entirely to be "fun" (even if a few of the songs are somewhat depressing on their own). In order for me to decide to download a song, the criteria is usually simple: I love the track but not the artist and would therefore not invest in a full-length purchase. (Note: This is obviously not the case with Johnny Cash, Marvin Gaye, or even Daniel Johnston, although in the case of the former two, each song is on an album that I do not feel compelled to own, and in the case of the latter, I'm just getting around to the idea of purchasing his discography.) The result for this mix's purposes: some real classics (including many "obvious" picks) coupled with a few borderline guilty pleasures, along with all things in between. Either way, it's certainly an enjoyable/entertaining listen for me while I work 12- to 15-hour days this week. Title from Ms. Gore.

Welcome to the wondrous world of downloading! There's no turning back. This looks like a fun mix. I'm also fond of "You Don't Own Me", although I have nightmarish visions of Diane Keaton & the First Wives Club everytime I hear it. And I love "Easy", or at least I did until Faith No More had to go & ruin it. Luckily the Mighty Quinn remains gloriously untainted in my musical world -- I've steered clear of the Phish version thus far.

I'll mention it to her, joey, when I will almost certainly run into her at next month's Fallen Teen Idols support group meeting (my secret past as Quizz Kidd Robby Conroy has thus far eluded the clutches of the "bad element" in this community, but is now laid bare) in Marshalltown, Iowa. :-)

Excellent. Love the Lesley Gore & Merilee Rush picks. The latter being my favourite version of that particular song. I would recommend the 'Kongos' album, I think it's great ( altho' I may be alone in thinking that )..

This looks really great, Rob. Fun stuff all the way round and sometimes, y'know, that's all you need to get you through the day, man. "Godzilla" might be one of the first songs I ever became obsessed with when I was a youn'un. Specifically, the live version from "Extraterrestrial Live". Great album

Killer bunch o tunes, Rob. LOVE that Jim Carroll tune, 3-6, 10,11, 13-15 and I once played a two hour version of Godzilla with three drummers and 9 guitarists in an unfinished basement. Oh yeah, bought the Daniel Johnston disc (and half of Paul's shop) on Saturday and love it even more than I thought I would.

You do good mixes. I love loads of these songs. You wouldn't go wrong getting full hits collections from English Beat, Leslie Gore, and/or Jim Carroll (or just get Catholic Boy which has at least two more songs that I think stand alongside People Who Died).

When I first got my computer up to speed to download from iTunes I bought a slew of songs by artists that I thought I only needed one or two songs by (Foreigner, Eminem, Cobra Verde, Cranberries, Charlie Rich...), but after a few bursts of downloading frenzy I hardly ever went back there. Although seeing your mix makes me realize that I don't have Quinn the Eskimo on the Manfred Mann comp I have - so maybe I'll be going back to download more. Also, I love that Clarence "Frogman" Henry pick. And Godzilla has been a fave of mine from years, especially the even more over the top live version.

great stuff. Bow Wow Wow is one of my favorites of the '80s. also love your 3, your 6, your 12 and your 13. downloading sounds like a good way to go, haven't started yet myself - but soon, I think. I'm usually a few years behind everyone else.

Great mix Rob, good to see World Party and Daniel Johnston. I also have a soft spot for that Suicidal Tendencies track.

Nice mix and interesting to read about the concept behind the whole thing. I know what you mean about Daniel Johnston - it takes a while to get used to him. Interesting that you should include You're So Vain too - for some reason I used to hate the song until, a few months ago, I had a bit of a revelation and decided I actually didn't. I also like the Johnny Cash pick and the (English) Beat. Can't wait till my computer is fast enough for my iTunes to work!

Didn't think it was possible to obsess more about music 'til I entered the d/l world. Guiltily or not, there's a load of pleasures here. I might second Dale's comment on The Beat & Jim Carroll's first, but it's more likely out of nostalgia since I haven't listened to either for years.

So you've finally lost your downloading virginity ;) It's about frickin' time! Now you don't have to go through the trouble of buying an entire Icicle Works or Carly Simon record just to get one song. God bless the good people at I-Tunes.

This is great Rob, and a lot of my faves, including Institutionalized, You Don't Own Me, and that wonderful Carroll tune. Carroll's Wicked Gravity is among my desert island disks almost entirely for that one song (though Wicked Gravity kicks some ass too).
