Comment:

I just discovered this site this week and am reeling in awe of how cool it is. I have so many mixes that I have done over the years that I want to share, but don't want to overdo it. At any rate, this is, I suppose, a more accessible companion to the "Pangs of Dark Delight" mix I made (which was also originally longer and on cassette but I prefer the more concise CD version I posted). For those that puzzled over the lack of "Bela Lugosi's Dead" this is for you.
I also included a more popular Sisters Of Mercy track on this one, although I
opted for "Dominion" over "This Corrosion" simply because I
just think that the latter song is totally ridiculous. ;)
The Goth scene has changed so much over the years, that even as clichTd or as popular as some of these songs might be to those with a clue, they do not get as much club play anymore. At one time, these were the most popular and most requested songs at the Goth night I DJ for in Pittsburgh.
I didn't include Industrial here, save for Skinny Puppy -- you know there should be some Ministry, 242, FLA, etc
acknowledged.  I will eventually post my Classic Industrial Dance mix.
But anyway, as worn out as these songs have become, they are still great tracks that show, in my opinion, what Goth was about in the broadest and most universal sense (even though I ultimately feel the best stuff is the lesser known and more angry stuff from the early 80s.)
The title of the compilation is, of course, a play on The Smiths song
"Panic."   One of the 'wonderful' things about being a DJ is
knowing how great the obscure stuff is, but being constantly bombarded with
requests for the same popular songs over and over.  So you play them, and
make the masses happy, but always disappoint the elitists that want to hear And
Also The Trees.  So that is where the idea of "Nag The DJ" vs.
"Hang The DJ" came from.  Its basically one and the same and you
cannot win :P
Finally, this mix was made for my girlfriend when we first met and she was
'learning the ropes' of Goth as it were.

Oh boy i've lived through this stuff, I once sang in a Sisters of Mercy tribute band but dont tell anyone ;) This is packed with classics. You should check out the new Grant Lee Phillips record, he covers eighties alt anthems such as Boy's Don't Cry, Killing Moon, Wave of Mutilation, City of Refuge and The Church song you've included here.

I wasn't sure if I should be "hurt" by this mix, as most of the cuts here are among my favorites, but I finally got it through my thick head what you were saying... Welcome, and do carry on!

Ahhh, the disappointed elitists. Those were the days and now I saw fook 'em! I'm kidding of course. I used to invite close friends, other DJs and peeps whose musical tastes weren't surface scratch to my "pre-show". I would tell them I had music I couldn't dream of playing for the "masses" but would need them to come out early (before the club/bar/patio/pool-hall/warehouse became crowded). Most of my best sets were in "pre-shows". The invited were happy to hear obscure and spankin' new stuff while the bar sold more drinks and the regulars had no idea. Being a shrewd business chick I always negotiated a percentage of the bar during "pre-shows". I'm a sucker for concept mixes and a clever title. This mix is chocked full of prostituted goodness.Welcome to the site; hope you enjoy your stay.

I do believe that every track here (no matter how "overplayed") is earth-shatteringly good. I will never tire of "Army Of Me", "Under The Milky Way", "Love Will Tear Us Apart", "How Soon Is Now" et al. You appear to have this genre well and truly nailed. Furthermore, Your notes are most enlightening; and you find time to comment intelligently upon other mixers work. So I say, welcome to the site with open ears and open arms.

Welcome to the sight. Nicely mixed and thanks for the notes. The Goth night you DJ wouldn't be on Carson St., would it?

Yep, these are classics. Brings back memories of sulking in the back of the skating rink by the Defender game, wishing I had a girlfriend :(. Oh, well--now I'm a high-powered executive who listens to Sting and Don Henley and who buys and sells young punks like peanuts. It was all worth it in the end.

"Army of Me" is stretching it, but it was/is a popular and dark club track here in Pittsburgh. Bjork's had her own share of goth moments. For trivia purposes, she did background vocals on the song "Falling" from Current 93. ;)

This is crazy to find, simply because I used to go to Ceremony back when it was all ages and at The Upstage. In fact, I was probably the person requesting all of these songs and similarly being one of the only ones dancing to it.
