Comment:

I'll be honest with you all--I really like these guys. They were/are thugs, Bez was a joke, and Shaun Ryder has a hard time carrying a tune in a traditional manner, but something about them (actually, Ryder's vocals and lyrics are probably my favorite elements of the band) has always appealed to me. I don't even think that their much-lamented, super-laboriously-spawned final album, Yes, Please!, is all that bad (although it's definitely a more scattershot drop after the twin achievements of both Bummed and Pills 'n' Thrills 'n' Bellyaches). After looking at this track listing, I do regret including only one track from their first album (which is good, but doesn't have a million standout songs) and regret cutting "Sunshine & Love," "Total Ringo," "Performance," "Rave On," "Cob 20," "Kuff Dam," "Donovan" (yes, that means the entire Pills 'n' Thrills album was under consideration), "Tart Tart" and "Bring a Friend." [Note: I revised this a day after posting, replacing "Total Ringo" with "Dennis and Lois."]

Ah lifes too short for regrets Rob, youve got Wrote for Luck, Lazyitis, Hallelujah and Gods Cop, four absolute classics in my world. I agree wholeheartedly about Ryders lyrics no one with the possible exception of Mark E. Smith can make total gibberish sound so profound. Step on Mr Conroy, Step on...

We've been courteous, and look where it got us. Everything you say is true. Of course, there's no place on your mix for "Tokoloshe Man", but hey, you can't have everything -- where would you put it?

No WFL? WTF. Still some good picks here. Hallelujah and God's Cop are my favorites. I think I liked Lazyitis too, I can't remember. Bez was the best thing about the band, that I do know. You're rendering that scaffolding dangerous!

The only band I can think of who actually got better the more drugs they took.

Yes Please? No Thanks.. As the now legendary NME review of said album went. I believe Orchid has got a little confused, as WFL sits proudly at Track number 2. The Mondays were great, and a huge part of my teenage years. You've summed up their back-cat impeccably. Rave On Mr Conroy, Rave On...

I liked these guys too, though It's been awhile since I've found my hand reaching for one of my two Happy Mondays releases (the live CD sank with my Tercel in a bizarre single vehicle accident in the early 90s, but that's another story). Maybe I'll do some rediscovering this evening. And who wants to start a collection for spectacles for Orchid? ;)

This is one of those bands that I never think I'm big fan of, but everytime I hear a cut by them I dig it. Maybe I should I break out the Happy Mondays albums again. You hit all of my personal faves.

Really great - like Slack-a-gogo they are always kind of at the back of my mind, and then I hear one of their tracks and remember how much I like them (especially God's Cop and Holiday). The grooves that Bummed and Pills 'n' Thrills produced are just fantastic. Plus, the catalogue of Mondays anecdotes is equally entertaining - going to Mallorca (or some other island like it) to record an album, selling all the equipment and Jeeps provided by Factory in order to buy drugs, and then sending back a tape of backing tracks. And so on. Lovely stuff.

I missed them at the time - somehow. Consequently, I don't know as much here as I should. Maybe this is the catalyst that I need to go discover.

all the good ones are here. I loved the pills... album especially, but haven't listened to it in an age. Another fine single artist choice.

I just couldn't get into these guys back in the day. I ran out and bought Pills when it came out, based on the hype and the amazing "Step On" -- but, aside from "Step On" (one of the best songs of its era), never liked the album, and would always opt for the Stone Roses or Ride instead. But after seeing 24 Hour Party People, I pledged to give them another shot -- which I failed to do. So, yeah, here's my chance.

once upon a time I went to backstage party at Wembley Arena with Donovan and Happy Mondays, that was a great show and a great band
