Comment:

Again, the link on the first song title goes to an mp3 of this mix that you can download during the next 7 days. Thanks to Mark Petruccelli for suggesting the possibility of me making a second mix for this period based on the large number of songs I listed that didn't make the cut the first time around. I used everything from that cut list in this mix with the exception of Bing's #1 hit of Pennies from Heaven from 1936. I did use one by Bing as track 19, but I haven't been able to confirm that it was from the year 1934 (it doesn't seem to have charted in any year). I also wasn't able to verify the year of track 2, which may have been issued as early as 1931 (again, Ray Noble's version didn't chart, but the ones that did were from 1931). The image is a Colonial model radio from 1934.

Note the mostly white chart-toppers (save the black performers the world, try as it might, couldn't possibly ignore). These mixes, full of great music, I grant you, are as striking for who they omit as for who they include. Nice to know things have changed a wee bit, chart-wise. Still, there's some fantastic, without-peer music here.

Thanks NLA for your comments. I just thought I'd point out that black artists comprised more than ten percent of this mix (as they should since they contributed more than ten percent). But there influence was felt indirectly as well as I think the mix demonstrates in how well white and black performers mix for tracks 9-12 and 19-22. In otherwords in at least the cases I'm here indicating, black performers had a definite impact and influence on the white performers in at least those stretches of this mix.

I loved listening to the first installmenet, and I'm sure I will like this one, too.

another great one. especially like the 9-12 run. it's a shame that tunes from this era don't show up on AotM more often.

A great listen Joe. These pre-war tunes have a great unifying feel that makes me feel like I'm in a Marx Brother's movie or a Little Rascal's episode. Thanx for this!

Good stuff! It would have been great to have seen Cab Calloway or Fats Waller live, but then on the other hand, download speed was so SLOW in 1934!
