Comment:

Waxing nostalgic for a bit, if that's ok. Like many of us, college was the height of my music listening years, when I was a dj, seeing a lot of shows, etc. I also think it happened to be the heyday of college radio, when a great band could be slowly broken via college radio (i.e. R.E.M., the Replacements, Husker Du, etc.), before Nirvana and the rush to find the instant next-big-thing in the supposed "alternative" world. But that's just me. Anyway, not surprisingly, I've already mined this era, in a mix I made specifically for some college friends, as well as two volumes of the jangly guitar pop that was all the rage at the time (see 1 and 2. But this one digs a little deeper.

Coming up soon: Pop Kulcher, the Law School Years; and Pop Kulcher, the High School Years.

It's funny, I was just talking about embarking upon projects just like this one (and those that you mentioned in your comments). Very cool. As you may expect, I was listening to a lot of this stuff at the time (or just after it), as well, although these would be more "Rob Conroy: The High School Years" for me. ;-)

Gosh, my college years were just a bit before this, but my music at the time was completely different . . . . although it may be closer to this now. I think I'll dig out some Camper Van in celebration of your years (see, there's another band I wouldn't have known then, but love now!).

Ooh yeah! Don't know a lot of the songs, but just remembering these bands gets me all teary-eyed for my college years too... Wax on!

Outstanding! I too was a college DJ around this same time, and I think most of these songs got played at least once on my show. Great to see Love Tractor, Game Theory and Guadalcanal Diary amongst some of the better known stars of the 80s.

Interesting, like Gobi, my college years were just before yours so I missed alot of these bands until significantly later.
Nicely done.

These are my grad school years. Good stuff. I relived a lot of this recently when I got a copy of Rhino's Left of the Dial box set. Look forward to seeing your upcoming "book-end" collections.

These would've been my post-college years, if I'd finished school in a more orthodox manner. My tastes leaned a bit more towards noise as I was a huge SST & Touch & Go fan. Still, I gotta agree with you about it being a great era of music. Indie labels weren't considered farm leagues for bands and with little mainstream attention most of these artists were free to do their own thing.

This is just fantastic, and from what you've said in your comments, captures the vibe of those years perfectly; there's nothing like the feeling a good nostalgic mix can give you. There's so much to love on here but I partiularly like the Smiths, Replacements, Wire and Mekons picks.

See this mix makes me nostalgic for that time (those years were just after college for me). Really creative period. I spent a whole lot of time listening to much of the music you've selected here. Great picks.
