Comment:

Hadn't planned on doing this one today, but decided to plow ahead and burn the rest of the trilogy. Following up on The College Years and The Law School Years, here's a real trip down memory lane. This was the toughest, as I wanted to keep it honest -- the stuff I was actually listening to back then, not just the music that came out those years. And, sure, I could have made myself much more hip by including a lot of indie/college rock that came out when I was in high school, but truth be told I didn't discover much of it 'til I got to college. To the contrary, for the early part of high school I was still big into classic rock and prog -- I even included a few holdovers here, however embarrassing it may be (sorry, but I really did like It's Hard and Abacab back then).

Not surprisingly, much of this is from the heart of New Wave, which, even if I wasn't necessarily listening to it all the time, was hard to escape, between MTV and John Hughes movies and the like.

Don't know if they count as embarrising in your eyes, but I really like the Marrshal Crenshaw, Romantics, Jam, Plimsouls tracks as well as quite a few of the others. I really like the idea of these autobiographical mixes of yours. So what's next? A 'My days as a lawyer' mix?

Nah, nothing to be embarrassed about. My high school years (which are 5 years after yours, as you know) would be *more* embarrassing, due to my then-fascination with prog and thrash metal (which balanced the great stuff--i.e., Beatles, Kinks, etc., and a healthy dose of the SST roster--that I listened to at the time).

This isn't nearly as embarrassing as my high school years, (Which just preceded yours, 76-79) During the 80 - 84 stretch I was in college and was still in my Zep / Yes / Who / Genesis / Doors phase and starting into my Zappa / Waits years.

hey! many wonderful stops along my memory lane here as well: Go-Gos, Ultravox, Wall of Voodoo, Prince, Yaz, The Clash, The Vapors, Echo & the Bunnymen... and Genius of Love was the first 7" single I ever purchased, when I was 11 years old. Coincidentally, I've just wrapped up a mix of stuff from this same era, with only one artist also found here on your list. there's so much great stuff from the early '80s. really, nice work!

Why on Earth were Yazoo named Yaz in the states? Makes no sense. Anyway, this is pretty much an excellent representation of the early 80s. Although I thought 'I Melt With You' was by The Cure (ho ho).

Sammy -- regarding Yaz/Yazoo, my understanding (based on what I've read and inferred) is that they shortened their name from Yazoo to Yaz while touring America. Yazoo derived from and old American blues record label, and apparently there was concern it was causing some confusion when they hit the states.

Oh yeah, I'm getting flashbacks looking at this track list. I've had almost all of these at some point in some format. Thanks for the memories!

not much to be embarrassed about here, it's all about the memories & there's no better medium than music to do just that. great cuts from the police, the psychedelic furs, tom petty, prince, pink floyd, elvis costello, bowie, the femmes, echo & the bunnymen, the clash - this is wonderful, an endless list of highlights.

These years were my club/bar DJ days. A different set of memories. 10 pm to 4 am on weekends. 12" versions when I could. I think I was spinning every song here from this playlist back in those days. Hmmm, except for maybe two cuts here. Nice mix.

The Squeeze cut, is that from Frank? And the entire mix makes me want to drag 'em out, dust 'em off and Crank That Sh!t!

April -- "Is That Love" is from Squeeze's East Side Story, circa '81. Their finest album, IMHO.

Man, you've got some great stuff here! As has already been said, there's nothing to be embarrassed about, and I think it just shows that, contrary to what's often said, the 80s was a good decade for music. The whole thing's good but I especially like the first CD - love your opener and the Devo and WOV. The Jam track's one of my favourites.

This looks a tad hipper that what I was listening to during those formulative high school years. So when are you going to post the middle school/junior h.s. mix? You know you were listening to Toto, Boston and Pablo Cruise! I know I was.

love the idea of this series. mine would look like about half of this, with lots of 60s stuff and an unhealthy dose of prog and hardcore punk filling out the rest. no, it doesn't make sense to me either. great cover, too.

This strikes a chord with me, so to speak. These were my college years and you've picked a lot of stuff here that I loved then and love now. Plimsouls, Vapors, Elvis Costello, U2, Marshall Crenshaw, Peter Gabriel, the Romantics--I could go on and on. Anyway, great idea for a series and I have to say that this is the one I like the most.

hey ho, I was listening to Genesis, Floyd, Zappa, Marillion and Roxy pretty much exclusively way back then . . . . I was one of the few punks that went back to prog rock . . . (sad that I am) . . .
