Comment:
Following on from Barrydali's '74 mix of a few weeks back, Barry got in touch asking if I fancied doing an Alt-DJ mix of my year of birth, 1976. And here it is! I kicked off the mix, Barry hit back with the evens. Incidentally, if you're not shy about it, let your D.O.B be known, as we're probably going to tackle a few more years. In the pipeline; 1971 (for Rob C) 1982 (for Salman) 1975 (for Blasikin)....MIX

Feedback:
wow you guys have some great chemistry, the tracking flows really really well - it's difficult to get that right with two people, but you guys did an excellent job. kudos to that
Looks wonderful!
1976 was a great year for rock, funk, disco and YOU!
Oh, my, my... can you boogie? I just had Jailbreak on the other day, loud enough that the neighbors stopped and stared. And good luck, lads, me DOB is 1959! 47 this year, and egad I have a daughter that just turned 25!
hmm... if you're interested at all i've got a 1975 mix: http://www.artofthemix.org/FindAMix/getcontents.asp?strMixID=97341 -- curse it all, i was born in 1982, not really one of my favorite musical periods let's say....
yes a good year for music
Oh, I love the look of this one - you two do some pretty fantastic collaborations. The opening five are, of course, killer, and appreciate the Lee Perry and Blondie. Nice cover too! (My DOB's covered, btw - Salman's got the same year as me!)
1976 was the year I graduated from college and of your listed tracks The Sex Pistols track was the tune that hit me the most.
Great mix and great year. Good reggae going on, the on-set of punk and new wave, while 70's aor still had some good ones. For instance, BOC's Don't Fear the Reaper, and Steve Miller's Fly Like an Eagle. Nice mix.
A seminal year in my life, and I mean that most sincerely. Glorious selections, chaps. The James Brown pick has made me imagine that I'm still the awesome dancer I always thought I was -- oh dearie me. Extra chips for the Ivor Cutler choice. Now go on with your bad selves....
Killer!!! So many great picks, 2-4, 11, 13-15, 17 are all personal faves. Almost afraid to see what a '61 mix would look like.
This looks really, really cool. Thanks for tipping your respective hats to yours truly... I'll probably do one eventually, as well...
In 1976, I wasn't even a sperm. How sad for me! But now I can enjoy my very own slice of it, so thank you SammyG! (yes that rhyme was on purpose.)
Great mix guys but I ain't looking forward to the 1975 mix that has to be my all time worst year for decent sounds imho.
Lots of great picks here from a very good year. Particularly like 1-8 and that Wild Tchoupitoulas pick.
I'd love to see a mix made for my year, 1978, since I'm convinced it was a slightly awful year for music. (Great job on the 76 though). -Famous.
the 70s get such an undeserved bad rap, I'm hoping the 80s, 90s and 2000s look this good after 30 years. Honored to be the subject of a future project!
Cool. You definitely captured the spirit of '76. Rob C. born in 1971?! Please! We all know he's pushing 50. Sign me up for 1989 ;)
Great job at compiling this. I'd love to see what you do with 1982. Other than a few punk albums, the year was a total snooze fest! Anyway, my only gripes with this mix is the lack of krautrock. That stuff is all I really enjoy from the early to mid 70s.
Most of my arguments (Reggae, Punk & Funk) that the 70's were the last great frontier. Coincidentally, that very Ivor Cutler song rose to the top of my ipod shuffle today to prvode me with 1:02 of bliss. Good luck trying to come up with something this good for my year of birth, 1963.
Great year and mix! Thanks for the links...
excellent work, guys. born in '69, I remember celebrating the US bicentennial in 1976 by hitting the bottom of a pan with a wooden spoon. glad you didn't stick that in here. anyway, great collection of stuff I remember from my youth (Ramones, AC/DC, Wild Cherry, Manfred Mann, Blondie) and things new to me these 30 years later. favorites include the Nick Lowe, Johnny Wakelin, 10CC, Climax Blues Band and those last two.
Great again, sammyg! That's a great 10cc LP! I'm with lo-fi on the " last great frontier" idea, too. Great decade.
This really starts off with a bang! No matter how hard you try, I don't think a mix from 1962 could match this.
Fantastic mix, fantastic year to be born. If you were American you'd be called a bicentennial baby. Love the october through december stretch (17-23) especially. You can't go wrong with any year from the 70's, I think. Including my year, 1978.
Fingerlicking good.
Good mix - this idea definitely has legs. I'm 1980 if you are so inclined (extra marks for November tunes).
BTW, is no. 14 called 'Footsteps' or 'Handcuffs'?
Whoa, you. I saw the first five listed and knew well enough you had this down. I Wanna Rule The World appears on a mix and I am ashamed I hadn't the guts. But Ivor Cutler?!? Come sit here on the grass and I will hit you with a hammer.
Lee 'Scratch' Perry! Now that's what I'm talkin' about, right there! I'll fetch the pliers...
. . . that Dillinger/Lee bit is great, but too short . . . I remember my Dad explaining that Blondie track to me back then . . . . and I bet 1965 wasn't looking quite so cool . . . (hint!)
