Elton & Kiki were top of the singles chart on both sides of the Atlantic. 'The Outlaw Josey Wales' was the big film of the moment. The UK was in the middle of a heatwave never seen before or since. And I was born.
That's right, today I turn 30. My bones ache more than they did yesterday. And, Christ my hair is looking thin. Things are good though, I'm off to HMV now to spend my ú5 record token and I can wear my new jumper down the pub later on..
I tried a few themes for this particular mix, in the end deciding to just threw a few old faves onto one disc. The final 5, incidentally are my top 5 songs of all time. Available for download as always, although I appreciate for most mixers, there'll be little to discover here. You never know though, if just one 17 year old 'Indie Kid' who has never heard Marquee Moon for instance, discovers it through this, I'll be delighted....

what a way to kick off your fourth decade, this is uniformly excellent. 15-18 is a stellar run, the marvin gaye, the stevie wonder, the REM, the bowie & doors choices - all prime, classic cuts. happy birthday, looks like it'll be a good one with something this well made.

Can I just mention that last song... Im no electronica buff but by jesus that is the finest song of its genre by a huge distance. I f**king love it. I remember a good few years back being at a show curated by David Holmes and sitting with Guinness in hand as that track seeped into my brain. Ive tried to sneak it on to numerous mixes but always ducked out. It's as important a song as God Only Knows or Waterloo Sunset in 20th century culture. (Albeit a subculture of the times). Rant over. Great closer

Happy birthday Mr. G!! A well-chosen tracklisting and I think that you've gone the right way about it - it's your birthday so you may as well be surrounded by your favourite tracks. I'm fully with you on the Joy Division - my favourite song by them, and love the Ike & Tina and Marvin Gaye bit. I'd buy you a drink if I knew which pub you were going to! ;)

Have a good one. And as soon as the download is done, I'll be putting my attention on Marquee moon, even if I'm not a 17 year old indie kid.

Belated happy birthday, my (5 years my junior) friend! I hope you had a fine day. This mix is worth some celebration, as well, particularly those last 5 that you mentioned in your comments.

Mercy mercy me, welcome to the 30s club Sammy G! 6, 8, 9, 15 and 17 are undeniable all time greats in my book. I quake at what excellent mixes this site has to look forward to in the Third Decade of G. Very stylin' look, Karen.

Hey Happy Birthday Sam! I just spent a week in the UK so I actually understand what you mean by a "jumper." Great picks for the occasion. And no question, "Marquee Moon" can still be winning converts.

Happy belated b-day Sammy Gee. I suspect when you're 50 you'll realize how truly young you were at 30... so please enjoy the prime of your life. A lot of my favorites are included here... for example Them's version of Baby Blue, which makes my spine tingle. And Ballad of El Goodo continues to bring tears to my eyes everytime.

United, United top of the league! United, top of the league!!! Well now that's out of the way, let me say this: the 14 to 19 endgame is beyond superlatives -- it's aural perfection. Happy birthday, Sam. A mix worthy of the occasion -- oh yes!

Happy belated birthday! This is a great, great mix. I'm 3 years your junior, so I can (almost) relate to reaching 30. But, man, that's still young in my book. Great to see the likes of The Idle Race, Stevie, Talking Heads, Joy Division, Them, etc. on one mix (hell, it's all good!)
