Comment:

Madhishain's recent mix "in case you missed it - waiting for waits" (id = 106213) has totally put me back on a Tom Waits kick again, and not least because that's the first I heard of this new Orphans thing (thanks, Mark Petruccelli!).

I originally started this mix in the spirit of g.a.b. l@bs, whose ability to convert official albums into reconceptualized "re-mixed" versions looks unparalleled to me. Waits's "Heartattack And Vine" has some great songs on it ("Saving All My Love For You", "Jersey Girl", "Mr. Siegal", to name three), but altogether sounds a little samy, on its own, to these ears of mine accustomed to Mr. Waits's hyper-daring expansive concept albums of the Kathleen Brennan period. So I mixed it up (minus my least favorite track, the minimalist instrumental blues jam "In Shades"; why this is even on the album, let alone as the second track, I'll admit puzzles me deeply, especially since TW's instrumentals are usually some of the highlights of his albums) with all these stray Waits tracks I had lying around, got a few more (including several by others "featuring" Waits) from the wonderfully convenient Mix & Burn machine at the local f.y.e. — and then declined to post it, or even refine it into the presentable form it's in currently, until mahdishain made it kismet.

Now I've got four tracks in common with mahdishain's mix and three in common with Orphans, the wonderful "Long Way Home", from the soundtrack to a movie I've never seen but whose title, Big Bad Love, seems to me to perfectly describe Waits's aesthetic, appearing on all three. To me this just makes the fact that I'd already done this project that much more exciting; feel free, of course, to disagree. I'll still be first to the stores come November 21st, you can count on it....

(Notes: Total time 79:55; it sure was hard fitting all those songs in there! Title from the opening track. For my philosophical view of Tom Waits in general, see my mix "Waits: All Is Fair In Love And War", id = 96256.)
