a birthday mix for a friend who does a bit of jazz singing on the side.

this one took about 10 days to come together - i haven't made an original mix that hasn't been under the pressure of my radio show deadline since last december, so i guess i'm a bit rusty.

anyway, it took a few days to clue in that 'i'm on fire' should obviously follow 'you're the boss' (thanks to antiparticle for the electrelane track). the 'dance' tracks were re-arranged multiple times until they flowed smoothly.

with the one year anniversary of katrina this weekend, i thought the victoria williams cover was appropriate, and 'cry me a river' was another obvious pick to follow. the k.d. lang cover of leonard cohen's song is amazing, but it turned out that the sinead o'connor became the thematic heart of the mix. i never would have figured.


the captain tractor cover incorporates a riff from slade's 'run run away', the old 97's contains an in-joke about the birthday, and kelly hogan deserves better than to remain only known as neko's backup singer.
