Comment:
Finally got around to updating an old Matthew Sweet mix, expanding it to a well-justified 2 cd's and incorporating everything up through this year's covers album he did with Susannah Hoffs. As with my prior version, few tracks from his pre-Girlfriend days (interesting for historical purposes, but not stuff I care to hear very often). Though he's never quite lived up to the glory of his classic 90s triad (Girlfriend, Altered Beast, 100% Fun, there have been a fair number of decent tracks on every album, not to mention more great covers & soundtrack contributions than you can shake a stick at. Definitely my favorite power-popster of the 90s, who did more with 3 or 4 jangly chords than most of his ilk could pull off.Feedback:
A fave of mine too. Agree with your assessment of his best three CDs & the stuff the came before.
I'm always impressed when somebody does one of these deals with an artist that I only know (and LOVE) a handful of songs from... Impressive. :)
Nice tribute to one of the sweetest guys (no pun, really) I've ever met. All great tunes here. Actually, I like just about everything from Girlfriend on - I don't think he went downhill, just mellowed a bit. The latest duet disc has real highlights, even though I'd rather listen to the originals of each and every song. The man can choose the covers, though.
He certainly has good taste in covers! Nice tribute.
To be honest with you, other than a few tracks on Girlfriend, he bores me to tears. That said, I respect the fact that he's got great musical taste (again, see the covers he's done and the artists he's name-checked--even bringing the sadly departed Robert Quine and the criminally under-utilized Richard Lloyd out of hiding) and that he seems like a decent bloke. Perhaps this mix would change my mind.
I'll with saying I was a big fan of his early 90's trio of albums. His later output has been OK. I really like his duet cover disk. Its a fun listen but of course the originals are better. I'll also say that the first time I saw him live in 1992 was an awful show. He was a real jerk on stage. Now the place I saw him was an old industrial hole in the wall that never had another band before or since and may have been a disaster from the artist point of view but he really took it out on the audience. A real prick. However, I did and still continue to buy his CDs.
Know precious litle from this guy's catalogue but what I do know I love & the cover versions look most interesting.
Impressive! You've obviously worked hard on this and from my limited knowledge, it looks like it's really well put together too. Like Laura it's a case of knowing a handful, but loving that handful!
I've been listenig to Matthew Sweet a lot lately. You've certainly nailed him with this.
