Comment:

The greatest band of all time... and, ironically, the one band I've never attempted to sum up in a single artist mix (until now). Maybe it's just because, hey, it's the Beatles, what's the point? Plus, they're one of the few remaining acts that has yet to undergo the (much-needed) remastering treatment, and I've been waiting. But I finally gave up and figured I'd give it a go. Though they certainly merit a 2-cd set, I thought the real challenge would be coming up with a single disc of my own personal faves. That meant losing a lot of great music (i.e. "Hey Jude," "Penny Lane," etc.). I opted to capture the tracks that I've never gotten sick of, and the ones that seem to have gotten a bit less airplay over my lifetime. A few more popular/obvious songs made the cut (i.e. "Hello Goodbye," "Strawberry Fields") just because I couldn't imagine the mix without them.

Oddly, though I've usually viewed myself as more a Paul guy than a John guy (likely because my favorite album is Abbey Road, which I associate more with Paul), I ended up with a bit more Lennon represented. Anyway, there you have it.

aside from a lack of rubber soul (my personal favorite beatles album), this is a very good summary of the greatest band in music history. but hey, as you said, it's not meant as a general, unbiased summary as much as a personal favorites collection on your part. i've never tried to take on such a task, & probably never will - i don't think i'd ever be able to limit myself without throwing in the whole discography. so, with that said, this is a very commendable endeavor, something i'd never have the guts to do. my hat is off to you.

Obviously, you can't go wrong with this catalog, so this is all great. I, too, bemoan the lack of Rubber Soul here (it's my second-favorite Beatles album and thus my second-fave album of all-time), but 1, 3, 5-7, 11, 14, 16, 19-22 and 27 all rank very highly in my own personal Beatles pantheon. I, too, have more Lennon represented in my personal top picks while still preferring Paul as a whole, but I think the explanation lies in the fact that many of my favorite elements in the recording of many of those Lennon songs were contributed by McCartney.

Putting together a collection of favorite Beatle songs is always a very subjective process and for me at least a constantly changing list. Actually I don't think I've ever put together a mix of favorites but usually listen to albums. Their catalog is so rich and deep. The favorite album has changed many times over the years but Rubber Soul has always been at or near the top. It is also interesting to note that a posting of favorite Beatles anything always seems to bring out the discussion and comparison of Lennon vs. McCartney. Certainly part of their history now and forever. That said... this is a great collection.

Beatles, eh? Never heard of 'em. It seems academic to me that if you have more favorite "Lennon songs", you're more of a Lennon guy - the one thing that is so present about the Beatles songs, moreso than most bands I think, is that the vocals really drive the songs' melodies. But maybe Paul was cuter - or he certainly is now. OK, I withdraw any sarcasm so as not to suffer any wrath of the Beatles faithful. The best thing about this band was the collaboration. I will always love the Kinks and Byrds more, and probably listen to the Zombies more as well - but the Beatles had them all beat for real collaboration.

Always a fun excercise. I recall having a crack at an alternate "1," when that album came out. John & Paul seem well balanced, and there's even a Merseys George tune. You're definitely a "Blue Album" guy though. I mean, nothing before '66?!?!

I have to agree with the no Rubber Soul assessment, but it's gotta be hard to put a single, single artist CD of the Beatles. Nicely done!
