Comment:

it's been awhile since i've made a tape for myself. i'm always making them for girls i date or good friends, but i rarely make them just to listen to in my car. so that's what this one is. i made it when i got home from work yesterday, and it's sort of a birthday gift to myself (well, along with my trip to chicago's legendary green mill tonight and the copious amounts of alcohol i plan on drinking tomorrow). but this mix also serves as a commemoration of the end of summer, a culmination of all the songs that made this year's chicago heatwave bearable. here's how the songs break down:

side a:
1. started off the summer obsessing over this and playing it alone in my room on my guitar.
2. i never gave radiohead a fair chance until this summer when i heard the new thom yorke on wxrt and loved it.
3. same with these guys. i put on "louder than bombs" on a whim a few weeks ago and went on a month-long smiths/morrissey binge. i think they've officially become one of my favorite bands.
4. this was a b-day gift from my power pop-loving roommate, and it's fantastic.
5. i sang maggie may at a karaoke bar last month, but i wanted a different rod stewart song on this tape.
6. i bought "starfish" at the wluw record fair earlier this summer and listend to in non-stop.
7. this song just soothes me when i'm feeling lonely.
8. another obsession. it felt like i was buying something new by the jam at every trip to the record store.
9. saw ray davies in grant park, and he played some great stuff off "muswell hillbillies."
10. davies opened for these guys who absolutely rocked.
11. heard this last weekend at rolling stones record store in norridge and remembered that i owned the album.

side b.
1. every time i long for autumn, i put on nick drake. i listened to this on a drive to evanston on a beautiful rainy day.
2. "the meadowlands" was one of my favorite albums of the summer.
3. i was listening to this on a date. i don't think the girl enjoyed it. needless to say, we haven't gone out again.
4. they put on a great show at the abbey pub that i slept through. sorry, i was exhausted! but i did catch this song, and it was great.
5. "love is hell" was the only ryan adams album i didn't own, and i finally bought it used at hyde park records for $5. love this.
6. usually, i change the station on the radio when the pumpkins come on-not because i don't like them, but because it's always the same songs over and over. but q101 played this one a couple months ago, and it reminded me why the pumpkins were such a big deal.
7. nights at the L&L tavern playing the juke box...
8. another new obsession. (it's been awhile since i've bought anything remotely new.)
9. r.i.p. arthur lee.
10. the mats being my favorite band and all, i had to buy the new best of for the two new tracks. while both are great, i was actually drawn back to their final album for some reason. it's really unfairly criticized, and this is just another paul westerberg classic.

looks great. I'm so selfish, almost all my mixes are for me to listen to in my car. happy birthday.
