Comment:

I tried to map out the connections, but it got too complicated. In any event, for those not familiar with these bands, Beachwood Sparks were a fine L.A. psyche-tinged country-ish band in the early part of the decade. Kinda Gram Parsons with a bit of early Floyd thrown in. They had two decent albums (the first leaned heavily on the country side, the second more trippy, with a so-so EP in between). They dissolved, leaving several members to form The Tyde, a poppier, janglier outfit, which owed more to the Beach Boys (and Pavement) than to Gram Parsons. Three decent albums (none great, but all with some fine songs). Along the way there have been various side projects for the band members: All Night Radio recorded an album of dense, psychedelic weirdness; the Frausdots recorded an album of dark 80's Europop-inspired music (which sounded a lot more like the Cure than Beachwood Sparks); and Mystic Chords of Memory, another one-off, was amateurish, acoustic home recordings. Mix 'em up and it's a pretty nice package.

I just love your informative notes. I will, as usual admit my ignorance of this group and any of their offshoots. Nonetheless, I feel ready for any essay assignment about them now. I will investigate further. If this is your objective with these mixes -- well, consider it achieved.

It looks so wrong to me to see a mix with so few artist names like thisHoweverI really get this . . . I've only got one Beachwood Sparks album and nothing by the Tyde or other offshoots (I didn't know there was a connection) . . . so thanks for the info and I'll go explore some more . . . (I love it when that happens)

I LOVE the 2 Beachwood Sparks lp's - nearly flawless, I think. The offshoots.... well, they're just not as good, though (as you show) they have their moments. Does BS still exist at all?

Once We Were Trees is one of my few favorite albums of this century, but I haven't been so engrossed by their other work (the first album, IMHO, is good but not great, and their last e.p. was not very good at all) or by any of the offshoots. That said, this is well-compiled...

I know a little bit about Beachwood Sparks only. This looks like a great intro to the wider sound.

A nice collective. I'm a big fan of that All Night Radio album. Wish you had included the Tyde's "All My Bastard Children," but I guess I'll forgive you.

Beautiful, beautiful stimulting work as usual. I am working on my Beachwood Sparks but they have yet to flame, on or out, with me.
