Comment:
Ween and "Weird Al" Yankovic are often dismissed as mere novelty artists, but behind the jokiness lies a level of musicianship and songwriting ability rare in contemporary music. Nowhere are their respective masteries of the popular idiom more apparent than in the original tunes they write and perform in the styles of other artists. Here we pit Ween against Al in a stylistic smackdown to the death! The Rutles provide some much-needed relief at intermission. [album art full size]
Feedback:
And the winner is? Well, it must be us, the listeners. Or was the bout abandoned in a frenzy of name-calling and controversy...Smashing idea. Probably guaranteeing the proverbial splendid time for all.If it's not too impertinent, my dear Shunn, are you willing to divulge the identity of the software you use in the creation of your singularly, wonderful artwork? Well, one can but ask.
I'm afraid Al's nine-minute Zappa freakout puts the final hurt on those two poor Weeners! Artwork courtesy of Google image search and Adobe Photoshop.
Thanks, Bill. I can rest easy now. How about that; all my questions answered, and at no extra charge. I must away and practise. One day, lad, one day...
Very very clever, I had alas dismissed Al as a novelty act but am able to appreciate the subtleties of Ween, that to be fair is the result of a smattering of indie snobbery which I am still trying to shed. Always pleased to see Stig & Ron and the boys too.
I think I'm inclined to full agreement with Barrydali on this, completely.
I'm with Barry, as well, although I have my doubts that I'd be fully converted to Al even with additional exposure...
cool idea. i love ween, and i love the idea of al -- it's his voice i can't abide. as for the rutles ... i've always believed that they were better than the beatles. :-)
Never been a huge Ween fan, but my 10-year-old recently discovered Weird Al so we've been hearing that quite a bit at home. While, as other posters noted, Al's vocals can be a pain, he's actually got more clever stuff out there than he gets credit for. (His parody of Avril Lavigne's "Complicated" had me laughing out loud.) And I'm with Sean -- the Rutles are better than the Beatles. Well, ok, no, but not that far off.
