Comment:
The Quickie "For-the-Hell-of-It" Mix (TM) where Rob Conroy exposes his inner grunge kid... well, not really. The Truth: 1) I've got a very cinematic real-life association with that Mother Love Bone track that haunts me to this day, therefore I can't shake my love of that particular tune (nor can I shake my indifference to the rest of their catalogue); 2) That is literally the only Sunny Day Real Estate song that I enjoy. I've actually *tried* to like that band at different points over the years--they've got a great rhythm section (or they did before Dave Grohl co-opted them) and Jeremy Enigk is an interesting vocalist--but really can't get behind them; and 3) Yes, I like a few Smashing Pumpkins songs, despite having an intense loathing of Billy Corgan. Go figure. At any rate, this mix is surprisingly enjoyable considering how little time it took to compile and considering my ambivalent attitudes (outlined above) toward some of the material. The thankfest continues: thanks to lo-fi for the Richard Bishop and Kaneko Jutok tracks, to sammyg123 for the My Drug Hell track, to hemizen for reminding me of how much I love that Groovies song, and to SwankQueen for reminding me how much I love that Orb song. Title from the pen of Craig Finn.Feedback:
Well I'm enjoying everything Black Mountain that I can find . . . . ditto Imogen Heap (amazingly). . . . and I'm always a fan of a quickie . . .
I remember your mixes were the main reason I used to check this website before I somehow forgot about it for a couple of years. This looks interesting, esp. the Pulp song, which I really should check out. Actually, there's a whole bunch of Pulp albums I should check out, and I really have no excuse anymore for not doing so as my girlfriend has them in her room downstairs.
I see no problem with enjoying the music whilst despising the artist. Unless I've misunderstood, and it's the musical style or ability of said artist that you loathe. Well, I'm sure you know what you mean. I wish I was as certain of what I mean... Due to some undisclosed psychosomatic disorder, I am unable to even contemplate a "quickie" mix; so full marks for being capable of such a thing. Love that Orb tune.
Wonderful opening 3. Hide and Seek is one of my faves from the last year or so.. And you're very welcome re: My Drug Hell my friend. Great stuff...
cool
Not bad for a quickie. I like tracks 2, 5, 7, 9 & 14.
Aint nuthin' wrong with that Mother Love Bone song though granted, most of their other stuff is nigh on iredeemable. Corgan is indeed a total c*nt but you've nailed one of his finest songs here. It and 'mayonnaise' are both wonderful but that Singles movie? F**k me pink that was awful. Keep on raising hell RC.
Excellent. Love the Bishop, Joseph Holbrooke Trio and Venetian Snares picks especially.
Crazy, man. That MLB song is tied to some pretty specific memories for me, as well. The rest of their stuff is irredeemable crap, though. Funny, I was just going to comment on the Singles connection (w/MLB and the Pumpkins tracks) when I read Barry's comments. I would have to respectfully disagree with our fine friend. Agreed that it's not a cinematic masterpiece by any stretch of the imagination, I can't help having a soft spot for it. Kind of captured a good era for yours truly. Of course, I love the rest of the mix unreservedly. Great stuff.
Oh Rob, I can completely relate to this "inner grunge kid" stuff... I've been having all kinds of weird grunge tendancies lately... suddenly it's sounding so cutting edge again... I never thought it would happen! God help us. I played the Singles soundtrack at a party this weekend and almost got strangled. Those were the days..... when "Cherub Rock" came out Billy Corgan was the coolest guy on the planet for a brief moment. (and sure he's an asshole, but at least he's moderately intelligent... until he shaved his head, at least). Long live Eddie Vedder! (ok I'll stop drinking now)
Likin 2 and 11-13 but not familiar with much else. Never could stomach the Pumpkins.
Intriguing, though not - per se - my cup of oolong. I'd like to give it a listen some time, if only to expand my taste in tea.
A BRAVE mix here! I agree EXACTLY with Mark here...and being from Chicago - not so proud of the Smashing Pumpkin pick.
I share your sentiments as well. I bought the first Sunny Day Real Estate album when it came out based on rave reviews (and the weird Weebles artwork), and couldn't get into the damn thing. Never listened to it again. And that's the one Pumpkins song I don't mind. Special bonus points for including something from Wings' unfairly-maligned Back to the Egg. And, yep, "Little Fluffy Clouds" never ceases to amaze.
Nice one Rob.
I always have this feeling I'd enjoy listening to tunes with you.
This is cool, and does show a lot of stuff I wouldn't expect to see in your tracklistings...and believe me, it's good stuff! Yup, I totally echo your Sunny Day Real Estate comments. I don't know if you've heard Mr. Enigk on his own, but I've a feeling you would like his stuff - he's really much better that way, imho. The Pulp into Imogen Heap is really nice!
Lots of faves and some stuff I didn't know I'd like... enlightening!
Did you realize that tracks 8 and 15 are both from the Singles soundtrack?
