Comment:

Ah, the sad plight of the secondary band member who gets an intermittent opportunity to contribute the stray album track or b-side...
A few different categories of second bananas to be found here. First, you've got the classic example of the halfway-decent singer/songwriter with the misfortune of being in a band with a dominant genius (i.e. John Entwistle to Pete Townshend, Dave Davies to brother Ray, Tobin Sprout to Robert Pollard, Scott Kannberg to Stephen Malkmus, etc.). Second, you've got the even worse "third banana" slot, where you're up against two (or more) primary singer/songwriters (i.e. Clash, Dead, Byrds, Sonic Youth, Pink Floyd). Then you've got the band member who is every bit as good as (or better than) the one(s) typically viewed as the frontman (i.e. Grant Hart in Husker Du, Jeff Tweedy in Uncle Tupelo, Mike Nesmith in the Monkees). And, of course, the occasional situation where the member has a key role in writing the band's songs but only rarely takes on the lead vocal role (i.e. Keef, Mike Mills).

Not surprisingly, you're not gonna find the world's finest vocals here, or even the best songwriting, but all these folks deserve their moment in the spotlight...

"all these folks deserve their moment in the spotlight" -- I couldn't agree more. Splendid idea, Mr. Kulcher; and very well executed. Good choices all round.

I forgot to add (after reading your comments) that I think that Grant Hart, Jeff Tweedy and David Crosby *are* three of the "world's finest" vocalists, and I also prefer Lee Ranaldo's songs & vocals infinitely to Kim's and marginally to Thurston's. And Kim Deal was always my fave-rave Pixie...

A very a-peel-ing mix Mr. Kulture -- cooler than Kim Deal. XTC's Colin Moulding also comes to mind, as he plays second fiddle (or banana) to Andy Partridge.

Well executed, my friend.
I would suppose Culture Club's guest vocalist Helen Terry would sign in with "Church of the Poison Mind". By the by, anyone who has any of Ms Helen Terry's solo records please contact me. Ta!

Cool concept. I see this is culled mainly from indie rock bands, so I see the lack of inclusion of Sebadoh to be weird. But I digress, I liked your selections from these second banannas, especially that Apples track. I always thought Hilarie had a great tune on each record.
Oh, and, I'll agree with Rob, and I guess yourself too, about Lee Renaldo... I've always thought his songs were great.
