Comment:

My debut mix!

1. Love Is a Friend - I want to make a Durutti Column mix, and this is one song that will definitely be on it. Sometimes Vini Reilly can take some effort to enjoy, but not this track. It's virtually Top-40.

2. Was There Anything I Could Do? - This is one of my favorite singles from the best Australian band I can think of. The music is intense and the lyrics are desperate - just how I like them.

3. Twin Cinema - This represents one of the newer bands on my playlist. Who knew they still made modern music like this? This track has a variety of textures, making it very appetizing.

4. Life in a Northern Town - One of the best from that life-sucks-up-North genre that dribbles constantly out of Manchester and Liverpool.

5. It's Just My Little Tribute to Caligula, Darling! - Should've been another in the PSB stack of chart-topping singles, but it didn't get the exposure. This is the cast recording, so it has female vocals.

6. Trails of Colour Dissolve - A great little single from the voice that epitomizes British Indie from the '80s.

7. Back Home Again - The atmosphere of Low, with the pop sensibility of John Denver. A winning combination!

8. Beautiful - One of Bob's sons debuts in the family business. I kind of regret putting this on as it feels slightly out of place, but it's good as a stand-alone track.

9. Toxic - I know I'm not alone among serious music fans in indulging this guilty pleasure.

10. Sex (I'm a) - Peaches remakes the old Berlin ditty into driving, slutty gutter music.

11. King of the Mountain - First single from Kate Bush's comeback album. Exactly what I've been expecting all these years.

12. Against All Odds - Down-tempo indie electronic take on Phil Collins.

12. En tus p·pilas - If you've only heard Shakira in English, listen to some of her Spanish stuff - it's a million times better. I like her early stuff best, but this is a surprisingly good track from her latest. I don't think it's a single.

14. Feel the Pain - A Dinosaur Jr. anthem that I somehow overlooked by focusing on their earlier stuff. All the parts work together well. Classic early '90s loud-soft, done perfectly.

15. Sign O' the Times - Supposedly a great song. I think it's alright. I kind of regret putting this one on, too.

16. Because the Night - For all of you who know the 10,000 Maniacs take, this is the original, far superior version.

17. Spring Rain - Another great single from Oz.

18. Brilliant Mind - The one hit from a one-hit wonder. Makes you wonder why their other stuff isn't comparable.

19. Beat of My Heart - Irresistably catchy pop, probably written by top pros. Has a new wave feel, which is why it caught my attention when I saw HD sing it on TV.

20. Church Not Made With Hands - Solid '80s new wave , better than most of the junk that was coming out. Intriguing lyrics, too.

Welcome aboard, and quite the debut. Can't fault anybody who knows their way around the Go-Betweens, Dinosaur Jr., and the New Porns (and I'll just have to take your word that the Hilary Duff and Britney tracks are worthy of inclusion). And "Life In A Northern Town" is one of the stand-out one-hit wonders of the 80s.

(p.s. For the sake of etiquette, it's encouraged to limit yourself to 3 uploads per day, so you don't drive mixes off the "latest submissions" page before people have a chance to see them. You'll find yourself flamed if you exceed the limit.)

welcome aboard. this is a great debut, with nice picks from Dream Academy (one of my favorite '80s bands), Waterboys, Kate Bush... I've never heard that Low track, and I have a feeling I must.
