Experiments In Mood #24: Oh, What Lies As This Fire Silently Rises
Comment:
I nearly categorized this one as a Folk mix; there's nowt so queer as folk. This mix opens with a collage of sounds including a Parisian cafe, the market in Houmt-Souk, Djerba, Amazonian tribal songs and Bastille market.
When you get to track 11 you hear the sonic experience that is the East of Ireland Pipe Band Championships. The first time I came across this ten years ago it was not altogether welcome, but then neither was the hangover I had at the time. I thought I was on a simple Sunday morning mission to get milk and the paper. But on the walk to the shop, there seemed to be a mass of different pipe bands all playing different tunes simultaneously.
Track 11 is a recording from this year's championship. To set the scene, you have one pipe & drum band performing for the judges but queuing up behind them you have another five or six awaiting their slot and practising all the while. As you walk along the harbour front you get the sound of all the various bands merging into each other creating, to these ears, a sonic synergy. Indeed yes, the more the merrier.
Competition Time
OK, should you wish, a couple of competitions:
[1] A free (physical) copy goes to the first person (barring that smart of trouser Curtis fella ;) ) to name that unusual instrument that appears not once but twice on this mix.
[2] A free copy plus two from the archive to the first person that can name the two bands/artists that appear subliminally in the Frennesz track Available
here.
Feedback:
Hey Gary, you are back in the field making recordings - wonderful! OK, I am going for prize #1: dobro? klezmer? lute?
Another amazing excursion into Muzag's field(s)...(& I see you've been on the lamb). I'll field this one, later, after you've posted your link.
Very interested but alas download will not download for me : (((
Looks great, it's quality not quanity that counts (at least thats what i tell the ladies).
This looks intriguing. Great Blind Willie and Karen Dalton tracks. Could 1) be a theremin?
I had to rub my eyes and confirm I was seeing the mixer's name right. ALWAYS good to see a Muzag appearance here! (Given the artists here I do know I can get a sense of the glory of this.)
This looks heavenly, as always. Can't wait to give it a proper listen. I am in awe of your talents, sir. You're the most creative mixer on the site, bar none. Great to see a new instalment.
Couldn't help meself...;-]
The fields are alive, indeed! ;-D
Mouth agape. I gaze upon this in awe. Amazing. MoTW.
I can tell right away that I'm going to think this is jaw-droppingly gorgeous. Thanks for the link...
looks nice, love to hear it
Always great to see you on the submissions board. This looks quite exceptional 8-10 looks inspired.
Great to see another one from you!! If the other EIM mixes I've heard are anything to go by, I know this will be - to use Rob's words - jaw-droppingly gorgeous. The closing few tracks look beautiful. Can't wait to hear it.
A beautiful mix indeed. I like that mbira piece. Is that the instrument you were looking for?
I think one of the artists in track 16 is Joan Baez. But the other?
Beautiful and reflective. I've nothing to offer on your contests, but can offer my gratitude and awe.
Mr Lanhamyodel has it on the instrument. Richard Crandell & Erica Kundidzora Azim both feature mbira's - and both come from excellent albums if anyone is interested; Mbira Magic & Mbira Dreams respectively. Well done Claude, I'll be in touch :)
Puts the 'art' in artofthemix. Lovely.
Inspired and inspiring. Thanks for the download, much appreciated!
Wunderstruck!
Gary, inquiring minds want to know who those lovely ladies are that appear subliminally on the wonderful Fennesz track.
Btw, I listened to this mix a few times now, and each time I am discovering something new: the way the tracks are related to each other through instrumentation or mood; a bleat here or there; an excellent transition...this is a really great mix.

Hi Claude, you were correct with Joan Baez (congrats!), the other version is by the not-quite-so-hip Percy Faith & his Orchestra.Anyway, I'm glad you're enjoying it. Thanks to you and everyone else for your nice comments :)
Wow. I'm enjoying it as I type. The previous 23 are as nice as this one? Thanks for sharing this gem.
Man, that's a great Jansch track. I'm running a travelouge movie in my mind while listening to this amazing trip. Congrats on MotW.
Fooking brilliant as usual. But, let me get this straight, 'cause I'm a smart dresser, I can't participate in your little competition! Well, I never. Congratulations anyway and congratulations to Lanhamyodel for nailing the piano played by people who are all thumbs.
Ahah!!! See: October 30, 2006 Entry
Well deserved MOTW. Just listened to this over the weekend and everything just seamlessly flows together very beautifully. I love your field recording, and how you incorporate them into your mixes. Excellent.
Wow.
Good lord, your mixes are on another level entirely. Downloading now... I look forward to what's sure to be another brilliant installment in the series. Congrats!
Been offline for a week or so, and came back to this little gem. Looks amazing; sure it will sound amazing also. Downloading now. Congrats on MOTW, too!
My first day off today in..lord knows & this was first on my 'Must Listen List'. And it's fabulous. I loved the espers, Jansch & Josephine Foster tracks and the Fairport-Davis stretch. It flows like a dream. I loved it. Many congrats on a thoroughly deserved MOTW. Of course now I'm unhappy at missing the previous 23, but I can't wait till for 25!
Wow! Well-deserved MOTW and great cover art as well.
this one's incredibly beautiful. I agree with what Salman1 said. the 4-5-6 & 11-12-13 & 19-20-21 transitions are inspiring! loved how the sound of sheep overlapped with the tracks on either side. I'm glad this one evidently made mix of the week at some point. a belated congratulations!
